SAP is changing its release strategy for S/4HANA, with the 2023 version set to launch in October. Instead of annual releases, SAP will now follow a two-year release cycle, including three or more feature packages. The S/4HANA 2023 release is seen as a significant milestone, emphasizing backward compatibility. SAP claims it will enable customers to enhance services, optimize business processes, and become intelligent enterprises. SAP also introduced a new maintenance strategy, allowing customers on older S/4HANA versions to opt for extended maintenance until December 2025 and directly upgrade to S/4HANA 2023. The change has sparked criticism from user groups, expressing concerns about on-premise customers having to pay twice for certain features. With maintenance for SAP Business Suite 7 ending in 2027, the S/4HANA 2023 release is hoping to drive more migrations. SAP's cloud strategy, including incentives for cloud adoption and acquisitions like LeanIX, aims to assist customers in their cloud transformation. SAP is expanding cloud AI services, such as Intelligent Robotic Process automation, predictive analytics, and conversational AI, to provide added value to businesses.
