Are Luck and Hard Work the Keys to Success? The juxtaposition of luck, often defined as fortuitous events leading to favorable outcomes, and hard work, characterized by consistent effort and dedication towards achieving goals, presents a thought-provoking contrast in discussions surrounding success. Success, encompassing the realization of personal, professional, or academic objectives, is a nuanced interplay of various factors, including the elusive elements of luck and the steadfast commitment to hard work. The notion that "Luck plays a role in success, but the harder you work and the more you prepare, the luckier you get" suggests that diligent effort and meticulous preparation can enhance the likelihood of encountering advantageous circumstances. While the exact relationship between luck and success remains enigmatic, empirical research and anecdotal evidence frequently support the notion that industriousness and readiness augment the probability of achieving success. In diverse fields such as psychology and business, studies have underscored that individuals who consistently invest effort, refine their skills, and strategically plan for opportunities tend to achieve higher levels of success. This phenomenon is partially ascribed to their heightened awareness and preparedness to seize fortuitous openings that may evade others. Moreover, a strong work ethic can engender a self-perpetuating cycle, where initial accomplishments bolster confidence and pave the way for subsequent achievements. Despite the unpredictable nature of luck, a prevailing consensus suggests that hard work and preparation empower individuals to leverage serendipitous occurrences when they present themselves. How do you interpret the delicate balance between fortuitous chance and unwavering endeavor in the pursuit of success, especially in the context of navigating the intricate dynamics of luck and hard work?

Reflecting on the wise words of Jim Simons, who has just passed away. He once told me, "Luck plays a role in success, but the harder you work and the more you prepare, the luckier you get." Today, I feel extraordinarily fortunate to have learned from such an inspiring individual, yet I am also saddened by his departure. Let's all hustle hard and make our own luck in memory of him. https://lnkd.in/eeMrgG_v

The final version of my thesis is here! Over the course of my senior year, I investigated the effect of the pitch clock on pitcher performance. I used pitch-by-pitch data from the 2022 and 2023 MLB regular seasons to quantify exactly how much the implementation of the pitch clock affected pitch velocity and spin rate. I came to a number of important conclusions: - There is a positive relationship between time between pitches (pitch tempo) and pitch velocity, especially for fastballs. That relationship became much more positive in between 2022 and 2023, meaning that the value of rest grew significantly with the implementation of the pitch clock - Pitch velocity had a more negative relationship with game-long pitch count in 2023, meaning that pitchers were likely getting more tired late in games - The effect of the pitch clock on spin rate was more uncertain, with certain pitch types, especially breaking pitches, experiencing the largest changes I am interested to see how my model framework can be extended to other measures of pitch quality like Pitching+ and Stuff+. I also think that my findings can present an important perspective on how much (if at all) the pitch clock has contributed to pitcher injuries. Let me know what you think!
