Last week, I had the pleasure of hosting the 'Tomorrow's Mobility' track at the heart of London Tech Week. For three hours, we heard from industry leaders each reshaping transport through innovation in their own way. 📍The #sharingeconomy is reshaping travel. Ownership models are rapidly changing, driven by environmental and cost concerns and the rise of entrepreneurialism. 📍The success of digital technologies rests on the ability to understand #humanfactors. Sometimes it's the most humble innovations that prove the most impactful. 📍Transport is a sector of sectors, each with a different vision of the future. The most powerful #innovation will come at their intersections. Thanks to all the speakers who made the sessions so engaging. Off to do it all again at MOVE: Mobility Re-imagined this week. Congratulations to Louise Haigh MP who has been appointed Secretary of State for Transport. There is a huge opportunity for improved transport to be central to a mission-led government and for the science and tech community to create the services to make infrastructure fit for modern-Britain. Here are just three ways this can happen: 🛫 A Science & Tech Transport Vision We speak about 'integrated' or 'systems' thinking a LOT in transport. That's great, but achieving 'integrated transport' requires a similar approach for science, tech and innovation. Rather than a strategy here or a proof of concept there, we need a vision (and implementation strategy) for getting tech into the system to help deliver on national challenges and objectives. This sets a direction (nationally and locally) and gives the supply chain confidence, viewing the transport vertical as an investable sector with a scalable route-to-market. Setting this vision will be worthwhile exercise that techUK and our members would be pleased to support. 🚅 Make Great British Railways an innovation blueprint Uniting track and train (and therefore cost and revenue) is a huge opportunity to rethink innovation and strengthen data sharing in the rail sector. Here too an outcome-led strategy is critical, ending the risk-averse culture by making data and digital a Board-level agenda item. This also means really tackling longstanding adoption barriers across areas like skills, procurement and data ownership. Again techUK members are full of ideas for ways to help. I've written previously about what Labour's rail policy could mean for tech here: https://lnkd.in/eAApPcxz 🚗 Unlock the benefits of Automated Vehicles AVs can unlock huge social, environmental and economic benefits. For that reason it is truly one of the most exciting spaces in #tech at the moment. The UK should and can be leading in the development and deployment of AVs through building on the world-leading #AutomatedVehiclesAct. We need a Call for Evidence to develop the necessary secondary legislation that will unlock the sector as soon as possible to enable commercial deployment by 2026 (as per the previous Govt's timelines). I'm really looking forward to engaging with the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles and techUK members on all these issues (and more!) in the months to come. 📸 From our roundtable with Louise last summer. 🌳 Brilliant to see our latest report with WWF-UK published this morning showing how digital technologies can reduce emissions at every stage of the agricultural supply chain, from production to last-mile. Hat tip to Weronika Dorociak who has been working so hard on this for months! A really clear and accessible summary of what’s on offer from fully embracing the digital opportunity. 👇 Check out the report and (very sleek) animation below if you want to learn more.

👇 This is a fantastic resource for all things #GeneralElection and #Tech related. Now including a shiny briefing from yours truly on the policy decisions needed to support digital transformation in #transport and #futuremobility.
🚀 How can Britain build the next tech giants? If the next government is ambitious, it can expand on the tech success the UK has already experienced. With the election coming up, both the Conservative and Labour party have set their sights on backing high-growth firms to deliver growth for the UK economy. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt dreams of a British Alphabet or a British Microsoft, while Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves has set out Labour’s ambition to make Britain the best place to start and grow a business. Despite these ambitions, the UK market must evolve to support these potential giants. 🏢 With over 150 tech unicorns, the UK is the scale-up capital of Europe, but barriers still hinder global success. The next government should aim to provide regulatory clarity and create investment opportunities. 👑 Royal Assent! Today the Automated Vehicles Act became law, setting the foundation for one the most comprehensive regulatory frameworks for AVs in the world. 🚘 AVs are here! Around the world we can already see the positive impact on people's lives, their businesses and wider economies. With this legislation the UK can keep up, unlocking these benefits at home. And we’re delighted that policymakers agree, giving cross-party support to the legislation as it progressed through both Houses. From a personal perspective, it has been so rewarding to work with the industry, leading techUK’s engagement at every stage, from initial consultation, campaigning to Parliamentary engagement and now beyond! But as many agree, the real hard work starts now as we complete the framework and put vehicles on the road! My analysis for techUK and what the next steps are here: https://lnkd.in/e65vbM3J #AVs #FutureTransport #AutomatedVehicles
