On July 4, 2009, North Korea launches seven short-range ballistic missiles, with a range of 400 km, into the Sea of Japan. This launch, just two days after a test launching four missiles, was a violation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1874. Sanctions imposed following underground nuclear testing conducted in May. Launched from the port of Wonson, the missiles provided an opportunity to test the missile defense system components based in Japan, Alaska, California, Hawaii, and at sea aboard Navy ships in the Pacific in a real-world environment. #TBT

North Korea Launches Cruise Missiles Off West Coast, Heightening Tensions North Korea's recent launch of multiple cruise missiles off its west coast has further escalated tensions in the region, marking the fourth such missile test in just over a week. South Korea's military confirmed the launch, which occurred around 11 a.m. local time, but provided limited details regarding the incident. These missile tests follow North Korea's claims of testing "strategic" cruise missiles, hinting at their potential to carry nuclear warheads. Earlier this week, state media reported the testing of new submarine-launched cruise missiles (SLCM), with leader Kim Jong Un overseeing the launch personally The missile tests come amidst heightened tensions, with North Korea accusing the United States and South Korea of provocation through large-scale military drills. The U.S. Special Operations Command's recent training with South Korea's special forces adds to the complexities of the situation. #NorthKorea #MissileLaunch #Geopolitics #RegionalTensions

The #Russian military has put into service the #Bulava submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile, which is a key element in the modernization of Russia's #nucleararsenal. The Bulava missile was developed under a program that began in the 1990s and is deployed on #Borei-class submarines. Last November, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that a submarine of this type successfully test-fired such a missile underwater in the #WhiteSea and hit a fixed target thousands of kilometers away on the Kamchatka Peninsula. According to the TASS news agency, #Russia's Northern Fleet and #Pacific Fleet together have seven Borei-class submarines, each of which has the capacity to carry 16 Bulava missiles. According to the #Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Bulava missile has a range of 8,300 kilometers and can carry up to 10 multiple independent reentry vehicles (#MIRVs) that can strike targets with different nuclear warheads.

https://lnkd.in/gxhXkyG9 Mention North Korea and its missile and nuclear programme would immediately come to mind. However, the threat that North Korea poses is much more than that. One threat that may have been overlooked is conventional arms. While most analysts agree that the North's forces are no match for U.S. and South Korean forces, North Korea has thousands of artillery systems that are in range of South Korean population centers, posing an immediate threat to even the capital Seoul. I speak to experts to see if this threat is credible, and if it has this, what is its missile program for? Find out more on my story on CNBC! #northkorea #nuclear #military #missiles

#StatecraftInTheNews: On Friday, the Korean Central News Agency reported that North Korea had tested the "Haeil-5-23" underwater nuclear weapon system off the country's east coast. The testing was done in response to the recent joint naval drills conducted by South Korea, Japan and the US, with North Korea claiming that the US and its allies were destabilising the regional situation. Pyongyang stated that its army is further solidifying its underwater nuke-based countering posture, and its various maritime and underwater responsive actions will continue to deter the hostile military manoeuvres of the US and its allies. Further, North Korea warned of "catastrophic consequences" to the US and its "followers." The US, Japan, and South Korea conducted maritime drills in international waters off the South Korean Jeju islands, with the US aircraft carrier Carl Vinson participating. The training comes amid rising tensions on the Korean peninsula, with Kim Jong Un rolling back efforts to reconcile with South Korea. #NorthKorea #US #SouthKorea #Japan

#REDFriday #RememberEveryoneDeployed | We hope everyone back home has a great Christmas celebration this weekend. We've got you covered. Best Wishes, US Navy PHOTO: In the foreground is a US Navy Ohio-class nuclear missile #submarine. This may either be the ballistic missile (SSBN) variant or the cruise missile (SSGN) variant. Not sure if SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDVs) are only employed on SSGNs or not. At any given time, there is at least one SSBN on patrol somewhere around the world, providing second-strike capability with 20 x Trident II D5 nuclear missiles should the US or its allies come under attack. SSGNs are a jack-of-all trades submarine that, in addition to being able to employ cruise missiles, can deploy SEALS utilizing the SDV seen here behind the sub’s sail. Behind it is a US Navy CMV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft, which has the capability to resupply SSBNs/SSGNs at sea. “Always Ready, On The Way!”

Many foreign policy and military experts are oblivious to the fact that North Korea's secret ambition behind its military buildup is to invade South Korea like Russia did to Ukraine. And North Korea has demonstrated on several occasions that their desire is the demilitarization of the Korean peninsula. This is a fact that South Korea and the United States have no intention of comprehending. North Korea can only minimize the test of missiles when they see that the Korean peninsula is demilitarized. But as long as there is no way South Korea and the United States will never abstain from military cooperation around the Korean peninsula, North Korea will never stop testing missiles. Remember when North Korea tested a missile that flew over Japan? When is the North going to do that again if the idea of demilitarizing the Korean peninsula is not taken into consideration by South Korea and the United States? As soon as the North can get enough food after building up their navy to have more nuclear submarines than the US has, they will invade South Korea. Therefore, it is imperative for South Korea to prepare to defend itself against North Korea. The United States may not be able to support Taiwan if China invades the island, maintains a fleet at the Red Sea against Houthi rebels, and also goes to war with North Korea over South Korea and with Russia by Article 5, all at the same time. Because the adversary may seek to stretch the US beyond its limit. It is therefore necessary to hasten and find a lasting solution to issues like the Israel-Hamas conflict, which is the bedrock for the Houthi Red Sea attacks. So that we can concentrate on finding solutions to major issues like what's going on in the event that North Korea attracts the South or the US mainland.
"The Biden administration must use North Korea’s missile tests as a pretext to accelerate its coordination with South Korea and Japan on (bilateral or trilateral) extended deterrence and trilateral joint military exercises," write CSIS Korea Chair experts. 🇰🇵 🚀 North Korea launched a missile capable of reaching anywhere in the United States. What do the experts say? Alexey Leonkov, military expert: North Korea is increasing its capabilities for a preemptive strike against the United States. They understand this, so lately they have been trying not to go on provocations against Pyongyang. At the same time, the 73-minute flight time indicates that the flight time to the target remains too long, and the success of a potential strike depends on the number of missiles and launchers. Nobody knows how many the DPRK has. Vasily Kashin, a political scientist and director of the Center for Integrated European and International Studies: At the moment, the DPRK launches missiles on a high trajectory, their range may not correspond to the distance of the normal trajectory. But if North Korea's ICBMs reach the United States, a situation of mutual nuclear deterrence will arise. Subscribe to @geopolitics_live

North Korea has reportedly test-launched two long-range strategic cruise missiles towards the Yellow Sea. The missile drill was conducted as a simulated tactical nuclear attack, according to the ruling Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun. The missiles flew along a figure-8 flight plan and covered a distance of 1,500 kilometers in about 2 hours 8 minutes, with simulated warheads detonating at an altitude of 150 meters above a target island. The test-firing was ordered by the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party in response to joint military exercises by the US and South Korea. North Korea aims to convey that the situation has reached a serious threat through the overpowering exercise of war deterrence. South Korea's military confirmed the missile launch. North Korean strategic cruise missiles are known to be difficult to intercept due to their oval or figure-8 shaped trajectory. This is not the first time that North Korea has conducted a naval strategic cruise missile firing drill. #AsiaRisk #NorthKorea #Japan Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/guSbsauy
