The launch of the brand-new #Ariane6 heavy-lift rocket will now occur in 2024, according to the European Space Agency (ESA) and the CEO of the French business Arianespace, who both made the announcement on Tuesday, 8 August. It was originally intended for Ariane 6 to start flying in 2020 and increase its flight frequency to seamlessly replace the more dated Ariane 5 #rocket . Ariane 6 has experienced a number of delays due to technical problems, COVID-19, and design changes, while Ariane 5 completed its 117th and last #flight in early July. Additionally, because of the Vega-C rocket's failure in December of last year, Europe currently lacks its own independent access to space. A request for a "ad hoc security agreement" to let some #european payloads to launch on #spacex rockets was drafted by the European Commission earlier this year. It is yet unknown exactly when Ariane 6 will take flight for the first time. #esa stated on Tuesday that a news conference with the Ariane 6 Launcher Task Force would be held on September 4 to provide an update on the launcher. The following steps for Ariane 6 #testing until its maiden flight in 2024 are outlined in a schedule posted on Twitter by Arianespace CEO Stéphane Isral on Tuesday. Isra'el stated that the team will "organise a detailed briefing after the long hot-firing test of September 26." The new #Ariane 6 launch vehicle, consisting of its upper and core stage, completed another test #ESA announced on the 6th of September. Its core stage #Vulcain 2.1 engine was ignited on the launch page, and fired for four seconds before switching off and its liquid #oxygen and liquid #hydrogen fuels were drained to their separate underground tanks. The test was conducted by Centre National d'Études Spatiales (CNES) and ArianeGroup under the leadership of the European Space Agency - ESA. It demonstrated that the system can be kept safe in the event of a launch abort, which was demonstrated during the 18th of July test. Flight models, including the #rocket that will make the inaugural #flight, are being manufactured and assembled under the responsibility of the #ArianeGroup. “We have a fantastic team working on this programme. We can all feel it – we are taking the final steps towards entering into the Ariane 6 era,” said Toni Tolker-Nielsen, ESA Director of Space Transportation. A good explanation for non-pilots without getting too technical. Helicopter autorotation is a common emergency procedure taught to helicopter pilots as part of their training. When properly done, the landing can be just as gentle as a normal landing. Even when not performed perfectly it can change an unsurvivable catastrophic situation into a survivable event, with various degrees of aircraft damage.

There is the crazy thing called "aerodynamics" someone came up with long ago. It has to do with air and physics and lift and thrust and drag and all kinds of other stuff. Basically, it may look like magic but it allows airlines to operate at a profit. To think that a helicopter will fall out of the sky if the engine fails makes being a pilot a really risky occupation and nobody would even take such a job. So we use aerodynamics to our advantage. We practice that autorotation thingy enough that it becomes instinct. And we practice that maneuver to make sure famous astrophysicists are wrong. If it suddenly gets really quiet while flying, we dump the collective (or thrust depending on type of helicopter), set the aircraft to a specific speed, load up the rotor system (inertia) thanks to air flowing through the rotors, at roughly 100 feet (above the ground) we slow the aircraft way back and start pulling in some of that inertia. As the aircraft reaches about 10 feet (above the ground) we pull in the rest of the inertia (collective thing) and make a soft gentle landing. The helicopter will make a short roll (forward movement) and we all jump out and celebrate that famous astrophysicists are wrong thanks to aerodynamics. Then the FAA shows up and we have to do a ton of paperwork. But at least we are alive and ready to fly again but with a different engine that makes noise.

I imagine that we can use modern day technology such as Ai to automate the autorotation process, and safely land a helicopter that is in distress. Say for example, if the helicopter recognizes that there’s a fault in the system, then activates the emergency response process described in this video using programmed logic, it may be better for the pilot and the survival of those on board. In this case, human error is reduced (operating under a stressful situation), and the onboard intelligence is left to calculate the rest. The #Ariane6 upper stage completed its inaugural flight on the test bench DLR-Institut für Raumfahrtantriebe last week, passing another hot-fire test which was representative of Ariane 6’s first mission. Let's take this opportunity to take a closer look at these technical masterpieces from our #SpaceExcellenceCentre in #Bremen and their tasks in #space. 🚀🛰️ Upper stages are designed to deliver the payload into orbit, but also to protect satellites and spacecraft during launch. As a rocket soars, enormous forces are released. Strong vibrations shake the spacecraft and its passengers. "During the launch phase, the upper stage acts as a damping element between the lower stage and the payload," explains Jens Lassmann, ArianeGroup Site Manager in #Bremen, Germany. During the journey to the target orbit, the upper stage acts as a womb for its passenger. It provides power and all the systems needed to operate and maintains communication with the ground for real-time status checks. "While satellites are mostly in sleep mode, sensitive instruments or missions are actively monitored," says Jens Lassmann. However, challenges persist as the payload ventures beyond our atmosphere. Once the fairing is removed, the satellite is exposed to the unforgiving elements of space and unfiltered radiation. To mitigate their effects, the upper stage has a number of manoeuvres at its disposal. For example, to counteract the extreme temperature difference between the sunny and shady sides, the upper stage performs a deliberate rotation known as 'barbecue mode'. The video gives an impression of how the upper stage moves in space. The simulation shows the final phase of the #JUICE probe with the #Ariane5 upper stage. The perfect trajectory saved the #ESA's Jupiter mission valuable fuel for its eight-year mission. How was this achieved?
