¨What Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim in Bilbao did to set off a tsunami of museum projects and the High Line in New York did to repurpose derelict railway tracks, TransMilenio did for global transportation¨ That Michael Kimmelman, one of the foremost architectural critics in the world should say this in his article last week in The New York Times is very powerful. The fact is that despite frequent hysteria, buses will be the main means of public transport in most of the world cities for the next 100 years at least, and even in the wealthiest countries and in cities with extensive Metro systems, buses will have a high share of public transport. In lower density and suburban areas, buses are the only possible means to provide public transport. And BRT is the most efficient way to use buses.

🚇🌆 Exploring Berlin's Cool U-Bahn Stations: Fascinating Facts! 🛤️💡 Berlin's U-Bahn isn't just a transport network; it's a cultural icon. Each station tells a story, combining functionality with unique architectural flair. Here are three "good to know" facts about these urban marvels: 1. Artistic Stations: Many U-Bahn stations in Berlin are known for their artistic designs. For instance, the U-Bahnhof Heidelberger Platz station, with its cathedral-like arches, offers a visual treat to commuters. 2. Historic Significance: Some stations, like the ghost station at Nordbahnhof, carry historical significance, serving as poignant reminders of Berlin's divided past during the Cold War era. 3. Eco-Friendly Approach: Berlin is progressively incorporating eco-friendly practices in its U-Bahn system. Solar panels and energy-efficient lighting are becoming more common, showcasing the city's commitment to sustainability. Next time you ride the U-Bahn, take a moment to appreciate the remarkable blend of history, art, and innovation that defines these stations. . . Uncovering Berlin, one station at a time. 🌹 #RosenthalSolutions

Despite having visited Glasgow many times and having worked in the city over the past 12 months, I had never visited Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum until today. It is a magnificent building housing an impressive collection of artwork, artefacts and natural history displays, with a Scottish and Glaswegian focus. Perhaps the most impressive exhibition for me was ‘Glasgow Stories’, illustrating nearly 1,000 years of history of this great city and focussing on four eras: Medieval, Georgian, Victorian and contemporary. The exhibition charts Glasgow’s expansion through trade, its engineering & manufacturing heyday, post-industrial decline and cultural rebirth as a modern centre for arts, entertainment, events and education. It was a reminder for me that cities are not static built environments: they are living ecosystems, constantly evolving, adapting and changing in response to the environment and situation around them - and in the UK there is perhaps nowhere else that has had to evolve and adapt as much as Glasgow has. How do you imagine your city might look in 50, 100 or 1,000 years time? 🤔 #cities #urbanism #regeneration

📢 The 2nd New European Bauhaus festival is currently held in Brussels this week and we are proud to have contributed to the movement in our project work. 🌍 Together with Henning Larsen, we successfully coordinated the incubation of 20 place-based projects across 15 EU countries for the DG REGIO of the European Commission last year, focusing on small and mid-sized communities striving for a greener tomorrow. The New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative, which Ursula von der Leyen, EU Commission President, has dubbed the ‘soul of the EU Green Deal,’ focuses on transforming urban landscapes into beautiful, sustainable, and inclusive masterpieces. 🔍 Take a glimpse at how we helped European towns and cities with less than 100,000 inhabitants align their projects to the NEB approach and thus enhance their impacts in the slides below. 👇 For further information on the tools we used, check out our NEB Toolbox: https://lnkd.in/dSngFUVm #neweuropeanbauhaus #neb #sustainabilityconsulting #sustainablechange

Great experience to attend the #POLIS23 conference in Leuven and to visit not only Leuven but also Antwerpen and Ghent for the first time. Belgian cities mean business when we talk shifting mobility to low carbon modes like cycling, walking, public transport, and sharing! Many other cities are making progress in sustainable passenger and/or freight, and good to see support to this from regions, states, EU, and horizontal networks across Europe. I was honored to present CONCITO's comparative study on Aligning Transport Decarbonisation Across Policy Levels , and just slightly embarrassed to report that my home country of Denmark is not a top aligner in this field at all. Speaking about aligning across levels I was not least impressed with Slovenia’s national support program for Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning now entering its third generation, as presented by Aljaž Plevnik Plvenik of the Slovenian Urban Planning Institute. Initially driven in part by EU projects but now self-standing and well ahead of the curve. It was also super interesting to hear about visions and efforts, but also challenges, to decarbonize transport in cities like Leuven, Bologna, Stockholm, Groningen and Ljubljana who have joined the EU Mission pledge for #NetZeroCities by 2030. The task to draw up Climate City Contracts seemed daunting and time consuming considering how little time we have, but hopefully worth it, as the contracts oblige not only city governments but many other public and private entities to take action and stay on course. Thanks in particular to Mayor Mohamed Ridouani, Tim Asperges and Jessie Van Couwenberghe of Leuven to share insights of their extensive work. The positive take away from the final discussion among Mayors, was that indeed as a politician: You can win elections by promoting sustainable mobility. With this image of Leuvens Old City Hall, a Merry Christmas to all!

Solving global challenges together……the Dutch solutions From 7-9 November, the Dutch will once again be in Barcelona for the 2023-edition of the Smart City World Expo. Do you want to know more about how to make cities smart and sustainable? Then talk to the Dutch! In our pavilion no C1.11, we’ll be showcasing our approach along the lines of concrete and tangible pillars: from our natural urge to work together, our experience in the areas of urban design and mobility innovation to the use of data for smart city purposes in the new Dutch Metropolitan Innovations ecosystem. The Netherlands is basically one large, urbanized area. About 75% of all Dutch people live in cities. Our cities are already significantly densified, but at the same time we want to respect our waterfront location and our nature. The challenges that cities face worldwide in terms of climate neutrality, liveability and digital inclusivity are very recognizable to us. And we know better than anyone how to deal with them. The solutions we have come up with are scalable and applicable anywhere in the world. Do you want to know more about making cities smart and sustainable? Talk to the Dutch at the Smart City Expo World Congres in Barcelona!
