The ‘world’s first’ Floating Offshore Wind Innovation Centre (FLOWIC) has opened in Aberdeen’s Energy Transition Zone. Led by the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult the £9 million centre houses various pieces of equipment to help companies de-risk technologies essential to the sector's success, including a large-scale dynamic cable flex fatigue rig, large-scale anchor test rig and virtual reality studio. "This facility represents a groundbreaking step forward in the commercialisation of floating offshore wind – a sector that will be critical to meeting our net zero targets," said Andrew Jamieson, Chief Executive at ORE Catapult. "When you look at the projected global market demand for floating wind technology over the coming years, the opportunity is eye-watering; dynamic cables alone will be a more than £2 billion global market over the next decade. He added: "Here in the UK we are well placed to play a leading role in that market by developing the supply chain to support the innovations that will bring this potential to life. Others are chasing the same prize though, so the time is right to make sure Scottish and UK companies are at the front of that race, and this facility is a key part of helping that happen." #ScotlandIsNow #FloatingWind

We're shining a beam of sunlight onto the ground-breaking RWE Nautical SUNRISE project today, which is poised to revolutionise offshore renewable energy. SolarDuck modular offshore solar (OFS) triangles will be integrated with wind turbines to generate an 800MW project off the Dutch coast. R&D efforts are intensely focused on minimising the environmental footprint and maximising the sustainability of the floating solar system throughout its full life-cycle. And, the project is committed to ensuring these OFS systems can withstand the harsh realities of marine environments. Denmark's renewable energy sector is buzzing, and one company to watch is Floating Power Plant. Theirs is an interesting story. Back in the early 2000s, wave power was touted as the next big thing in renewables. But the challenges of scaling and lack of investment dampened that initial enthusiasm. Floating Power Plant, however, saw an opportunity. Instead of focusing on wave power, they added floating wind technology and hydrogen to their portfolio. It's an innovative approach that's paid off. They've raised over €20m since 2004, with over €13m coming from private investors. Beyond the research, by 2026 they aim to showcase their technology in the Canary Islands with a project that merges all three energy forms. Anders Køhler, the company's CEO, believes their combined approach can rival traditional offshore wind energy in the future.
