On Lesotho's Biodiversity(Mammals and birds) Encounters in the Mountain Kingdom By:Suping Makoaela There is a growing concern of Lesotho's biodiversity loss cited in many instances. Though it sparks controversy our country is part of international organisations that aims in conversation of the biodiversity e.g GEF, UNEP etc. Someone might be too lazy to grab a dictionary, what is biodiversity? The term biodiversity refers to the number and variability existing among living organisms and life supporting systems found in the living world. (McNeely et al., 1990) It is therefore necessary to aid in mitigation of biodiversity loss and sustainable use of it. In Lesotho we employ cavemen traits, well, when it comes to animals. Imagine the number of animals that we know by name but not in existence. Because it is common of us to go hunting and feed on wild animals, this led to total extinction and have put other animals on endangered specie list. Fearing huntsmen our animals specie seek asylum in neighbouring South Africa where it's their safe haven since they impose heavy penalties on huntsmen. Some animals such as, Blue Antelope is known from archaeological deposits within Lesotho( Mitchell, 1993) as well as rock paintings within the former boundaries of South Africa. ( Loubser, Brink and Lauren 1992) It is fashionable for Basotho to visit zoos in Bloemfotein to see animals like zebras and monkeys yet we once had them as our own but let to their own extinction. Species like Qugga(Sesotho; qoaha) would make a very good tourist attraction since they were endemic to southern Africa. This member of the zebra family was common in the western Lesotho in the early nineteenth century (Arbousset, 1842; Casalis 1884) which cannot be traced in Lesotho and entire southern Africa at the present moment because we cannot live in harmony with nature. #conservationmatters #visitLesotho

India's Landmark Fauna Checklist: A Global First India has become the first nation to compile a complete checklist of its fauna, documenting 1,04,561 species. Launched by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav during the Zoological Survey of India's (ZSI) 109th Foundation Day in Kolkata, the 'Fauna of India Checklist Portal' marks a significant milestone in biodiversity documentation. Importance of the Comprehensive Checklist The checklist, encompassing 121 lists across 36 phyla, highlights endemic, threatened, and scheduled species. It serves multiple crucial purposes: 1. Conservation and Protection: Provides a baseline for tracking biodiversity and identifying species needing targeted conservation. 2. Scientific Research: An invaluable resource for scientists and policymakers to understand India's ecological diversity and manage natural resources sustainably. 3. Global Leadership: Positions India as a leader in biodiversity documentation and conservation. 4. Policy and Planning: Aids in developing adequate wildlife protection and environmental management policies. Honourable Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav emphasized India's commitment to biodiversity, referencing the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" initiative and successful conservation efforts like the International Big Cat Alliance. Detailed Species Documentation The checklist details India's mammalian diversity and highlights regions with high endemism, such as the Western Ghats. Among 1,358 bird species, 79 are endemic, underscoring India's rich biodiversity. #Biodiversity #Conservation #India #ZSI #WildlifeProtection #ScientificResearch #EnvironmentalStewardship

Partnership Announced for Biodiversity! Kerry Hughes of Ethnopharm and Olivier BEHRA of Man and the Environment (MATE) (L'Homme et l'Environnement) and Net Positive Impact (NPI) have formed a partnership in order to promote biodiversity from some of the worldโs โhottestโ biodiversity hotspots. Hughes and Behra met in 2005 in Madagascar while Hughes was on ethnobotanical expeditionโa market development initiative in Madagascar for non-traditional products. Sharing similar convictions over the importance of the private sector in biodiversity conservation, Behra & Hughes have worked over the years on activities related to the ethical development of Malagasy and African medicinal, essential oil and food plants. Through NPI activities and partners, deforestation in a key biodiversity area of Madagascar has already not only stopped, but moved towards regeneration, and this has been confirmed independently. Stay tuned and get ready to hear the true stories of biodiversity hotspots, important sustainable product development opportunities, how people live, the plants they use, and how truly ethical ethnobotany-led development can alleviate and regenerate some of the worldโs most important threatened environmentsโฆ #biodiversity #ethnobotany #medicinalplants #africa #madagascar #elephants #wildlife #herbalism #lemurs #dietarysupplement #personalcare

The #Choco forests in northwest #Ecuador - one of the top 10 most important #biodiversity hotspots in the world- is home to the Chachi Tree frog among many spectacular species. Do you know about these frogs ๐ธ ๐ณ living in the trees? If not, have a read below- they are pretty cool, just check out those wide eyes ๐ . But their home is disappearing at an alarming rate and only 2-5% of the original Ecuadorian Chocรณ forest remains. Our conservation partner Fundaciรณn de Conservaciรณn Jocotoco plays a key role in the protection of the #Canandรฉ reserve. The reserve was established to protect one of the most important and threatened biodiversity hotspots in the Choco, known as the non-Amazonian locality with the largest herpetofauna (amphibians and reptiles) in the world. If you want to be part of preventing biodiversity loss and protect this region - contact us at InvestConservationยฎ to learn more about our high integrity #conservation projects.
๐ฆ On #WorldBiodiversityDay, we want to highlight the #Choco forests in northwest #Ecuador - one of the top 10 most important #biodiversity hotspots in the world. The Chocรณ is home to more than 11,000 plants and supports 900 species of birds - that is more than 8% of all bird species on Earth. The Chocรณ even surpasses the Amazon in the number of endemic and range-restricted species, meaning species that can only live within that region. ๐ธ Among the captivating animals is the Chachi Treefrog, a unique amphibian characterized by its yellow and brown patterns and big wide eyes. Unlike many other frogs, #treefrogs live in trees instead of water. They use their sticky round pads on their toes to stick to leaves, twigs, and trees. Tree frogs are smaller than general frogs and are also excellent jumpers. They rely on the humid, dense forest canopy of the Chocรณ for their survival. ๐ Alarmingly, the Chocรณ forests are rapidly disappearing. The Ecuadorian Chocรณ has suffered a high deforestation rate, with only 2-5% of the original forest remaining. ๐ฆConservation efforts are essential to protect the Chocรณ and its unique species. Happy International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem! According to UNESCO, mangroves are rare, spectacular and prolific ecosystems that support rich biodiversity and provide a valuable breeding habitat for fish and shellfish. These species perform vital functions for the planet by acting as a natural barrier against hurricanes and tsunamis and, at the same time, they filter and maintain the quality of the water, as well as absorbing significant quantities of CO2. Despite being present in 123 countries, mangrove forests represent less than 1% of global tropical forests and forest cover. Due to the progressive increase in population in Mexico, these habitats have decreased as their ecosystems have been impacted by the urbanization of the coasts and by the development of tourism and aquaculture facilities. Through the development of a specific and coordinated strategy to guarantee the conservation of flora and fauna, we at SICIM have been committed to protecting these species since the beginning of the Sur De Texas - Tuxpan Pipeline project, with a (sub) zero impact on the mangroves. In fact, not only was the survival rate of these specimens 100%, but there was also a 33% increase in new plants. The arboreal and faunal heritage of an area is an asset to be protected and safeguarded: SICIM operates in full respect of local biodiversity, developing specific actions and plans to ensure the conservation of the ecosystem that hosts our activities. #sicim #MangroveDay #forest #zeroimpact
