Leaders with high emotional intelligence have this level of impact: Mine was there for me when I had no one else. I wasn’t going to post today because frankly, it’s been one of those difficult weeks we all have periodically. But I’ve had so many heartfelt comments & messages about my Kind > Nice post this week, I felt inspired to share this. When I accepted my role at Toyota about 7 years ago, that meant leaving my small hometown & relocating to DFW, Texas. About 2 months into my new role, I experienced one of the hardest personal traumas of my life. I have no family. I was away from my small group of friends. And the only person I could talk to was my leader. I was reluctant but I needed to tell someone. It was the 1st time I cried at work; which was very hard for me being a “tough” high-achiever at the time. I didn't want to screw up my reputation or new position. Nonetheless, my leader just listened to me. He let me talk. He acknowledged my feelings. He encouraged me to do what I needed to do. He gave me the space to just be & process. He checked in on me weekly. I will never forget how he helped me get through that situation. Because he didn't have to. He chose to. I got to thank him for this (& his influence on my leadership) in person this week & it was incredibly rewarding. Leaders of all levels - you have so much more power than you realize. And you might be a lifeline for someone. Use your power to support your team. You don’t have to have the answers. You don’t have to play therapist. All you have to do is listen. And be kind. 💜

Today, I’m excited to announce the release of my latest book, The Notorious GIG: A Creative Guide to Getting In Good as a Freelancer. This is the book I needed at 21, when I was just getting into both advertising and journalism. I didn’t know the lingo, the rules, the titles or the process, but I knew I had the drive and will to succeed. I studied, practiced my craft and listened to everything and everybody that I felt would help me on this journey. I received so much in the way of mentorship, guidance and older creatives “giving me the game” on how to move with integrity, push through limitations and make my vision a reality. Almost 20 years later, I’ve been able to build a lane, career and practice that my younger self would be proud of. Because of that, I wanted to give back and give my own version of that guidance, encouragement and practical knowledge to the new and current generation of creatives. I came up in the culture of hip hop. It taught me a lot, but most notably it showed me how to recognize my unique creativity and understand that the world needs it. So I wrote a book in a way I hadn’t seen it done previously. And now I offer it to you, as a contribution, as a reference, and as a tool to help you realize your vision. OMD USA partnered with the American Advertising Federation (AAF) to host 100+ students at our 195 Broadway office for an afternoon as part of the Student Advertising Career Conference, which helps students learn about advertising, stay updated on industry trends, and network with professionals. Students got a glimpse into OMD during panels featuring OMDers from PepsiCo brand teams who shared insights into life and work at OMD. Students also viewed exceptional work from the past year and participated in a mock brief with OMDers.
