My career has had 2 starkly different phases starting with 10 years of extreme frustration and stress. I always knew I wanted to run my own business. It just took me a while to work out what it would be. Phase I 2000 - Started at Deloitte Consulting. Worked hard. 2001 - Passed over for promotion. Worked harder. 2003 - Threw it in. Went snowboarding in Canada for 6 months 2004 - Headed to the UK. Hired by boutique SAP consultancy. 2005 - 2006: Worked hard. Learned lots. 2007 - Worked harder. Got frustrated. Got stressed. Quit and went home. 2008 - Hired by tier 2 SAP consultancy. Worked hard. 2009 - Got frustrated. Got stressed. Quit. Joined Stream -niche SAP consultancy- as an equity partner Phase II 2010 - 2012: Revenue growth ~4x. Sold Stream to competitor (DXC) 2015 - Bootstrapped product startup. Move to my wife’s home town in Argentina. 2016 - Moved back to Australia. Startup failed 2017 - Joined Bilue as an equity partner 2018 - 2023: Revenue growth ~3x ; Profit growth ~7x ; OpEx reduction ~40%. Stepped aside. Phase I was brutal. I worked hard. Proper hard. My stress levels sky-rocketed and I lost most of my hair. At times I was physically sick on the way to work. I learned a lot but it came at a high price. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Phase II was about leveraging those learnings. I had a seat at the table and could help drive the businesses I had a stake in. My stress levels reduced as I was no longer fighting against the machine. I dabbled with a product start-up. It failed. Another chapter of hard-earned learnings but chief among them - while I know services, product is a different beast. My reflections… Working hard does not guarantee success. It might just lead to stress and frustration unless there’s a master plan you’re working towards. Success in one arena does not guarantee success in another. Be careful where you focus. Replicating success is complex and largely depends on the people you surround yourself with. I’m sharing this to help others navigate their careers without repeating my mistakes. If you’re grinding hard without a clear direction, take a moment to strategise. In fact, take a few. It’s an investment you won’t regret.

One thing companies shouldn’t consider during budget cuts is IT. In fact, it should become a priority. Want a “master class” in pivoting to profitability in SaaS? Take a look at the HR tech start-up SuccessFactors in 2009. Now, for sure 2023 is NOT 2009. But the NEED to change your MO in Sales & Marketing and realize the benefits quickly? That's the same! I've plotted SuccessFactors on my Rule of 40 chart from yesterday... and the contrast is STUNNING. Here's the backstory on SuccessFactors: Back in 2007, it was the hottest SaaS start-up around. After Salesforce’s 2004 IPO, everyone was eagerly awaiting high-growth SaaS companies that could light up the public markets. SuccessFactors fit the bill: huge growth, and yes, lots of cash burn.... Sounds familiar, right? Lars Dalgaard and Bruce Felt had a very persuasive message. The SaaS model, they argued, was like a “flywheel”. Recurring, predictable revenues that could last a very long time. Burn? Sure. But worth it since cohorts would be immensely profitable after acquisition. They argued that if the market became difficult, they could easily pivot their S&M spend... leaving highly profitable cohorts. (Of course, at the time, no one actually *believed* that would be NECESSARY, hahaha). But then, shortly after the IPO, the theoretical sh*tstorm scenario HAPPENED! The amazing thing: the company actually DELIVERED: Growth (YoY through June 30): 2008: 71% 2009: 44% FCF Margin: 2008: -35% 2009: 0% - Breakeven! What they did was pretty awesome. Especially when you juxtapose it with the current group of SaaS companies (see red line in attached chart). I don't know all the inside details of how they did it. But I do know that they completely changed the game on the field with respect to Sales & Marketing... Something that doesn't seem to be happening yet with most of the current crop! #saas #growth #profitability #ruleof40 #benchmarking

Update 🤓   As some already know, I’ve been “off” for quite a while. First on leave to recover from “life-ache”. A proxy for when your life somehow just seems to go temporary south. Then unemployed to reconsider what would make me even happier at work.   11 months in total! Hard to believe looking back…most of all hard be believe where the time went!? But it went by - and it went by well 🙏.   I’ve travelled around the world, from Costa Rica to explore a nation driven by an urge to protect their nature and ability to self-sustain. To the most southern part of Europe all the way up north of the polar circle where the sun doesn’t set, and currently trekking along the Disko Bay in Greenland out in the west, to learn about how more than 4000 years of history still impacts the world 🐳🥾🏔️.   I’ve explored nature, people…food (obviously😋).. and challenged my own stamina and way of thinking. Realized that there is always room for additional self-reflection. At least for me, but maybe for most of us? But definitely for people being responsible for how other people thrive at work. “People Management” responsibility in official terms…maybe we should call it “people happiness” responsibility instead? Happy colleagues are more fun to work with and tend to deliver better results.   Which is why is gives me great joy to share with you that I’m joining Visma Enterprise Danmark first of September. Visma Enterprise is exactly about how to help employees thrive through simplifying complex (and often boring to be honest) business systems such as HRM. How can we make sure that going to work is as smooth, educational, fun and efficient that you make your employees smile?   I think that is a very notable mission and I’m thankful and excited to become part of it. As their new Commercial Director responsible for all revenue, marketing and business development. Thank you to Anders René Andersen and Board of directors for giving me this opportunity. I hope to leverage my Saas and management experience and apply it together with the entire team to accelerate growth for Visma Enterprise Danmark  and its customers.
