Triangulating research insights has become a core part of my work. I’ve been collaborating with colleagues across roles and business units to better understand what we know—and very importantly what we don’t yet know—in an effort to build a more robust and complete picture of how people are using our solutions and the problems they are working to solve. This process of relationship building and cross-organizational collaboration has strengthened my own research, facilitated learning from my colleagues (thank you!), and enhanced my ability to provide research recommendations that speak to the business. Question for my fellow research and design colleagues: are you including broader industry sources in addition to internal research studies in your triangulation efforts? (Imaged generated with Adobe Firefly using a prompt that included "triangulating research about artificial intelligence.")

#Bias is of keen interest to product & design managers. "How can researchers avoid influencing the #data?" Resist assumptions by avoiding the researcher's context entirely while synthesizing data. The researcher (and org) context returns later, when making decisions and comparisons with the synthesized data. Bias will creep back in while doing that work with the synthesized data, but it's not as present in the synthesized data itself. Use an affinity technique that avoids themes and category words from the org's field. Avoid top-down, deterministic structures like steps in a process or chronology. I use an affinity technique of people's Focus of Mental Attention (FOMA) written with words that people used to describe their interior cognition. ⏤ 📩 Sign up to my newsletter: indiyoung.substack.com

You don't eliminate bias, you become conscious of it and look to achieve internal validity. Here are some practical ideas from Indi Young on #appliedethnography

Decision Science Leader @ Toyota | Drives Billion-Dollar Decisions | Optimization Strategist for Business Excellence | Author
In business, there's a straightforward mantra that often rules the day: "Get it done, and get it done effectively." While the allure of perfecting a theory or refining an experimental model can be captivating, especially for those with a passion for academia, the business arena plays by a different set of rules. ✅ Here’s the deal: if you find yourself in an applied team, your priority is clear: generate profit and deliver solutions. This isn't to downplay the importance of research and experimentation; these are crucial in their own right. However, when operating outside of a pure research position, the expectation shifts dramatically. Businesses thrive on action and results, not just ideas and potential. ✅ Adapt and Deliver: For those used to the academic grind, this shift in focus can be a jarring one. But it’s also an exciting opportunity to see your work come to life, impacting real-world processes and bottom lines. In the practical realms of industry, the ability to adapt your knowledge to meet business requirements is invaluable. It’s about making tangible contributions that resonate with stakeholders and shareholders alike. Remember, while it's great to seek new knowledge, the pursuit of applicable solutions is what keeps the business world turning. So, if you're on an applied team, embrace the challenge. Innovate, execute, and let your results do the talking. After all, in business, it’s not just about what you can dream up; it’s about what you can deliver. 🤔 How do you balance research and practical outcomes? #operationsresearch #algorithms #datascience #thoughtleadership #computerscience #softwaredevelopment #coding photo credit: xkcd

Sharing insights on management, learning, and technology, drawing from over 20 years of hands-on experience.
The Irony of the Information Era. I argued in some of my posts that one of the biggest challenges in an era where all of humanity's accumulated information is available at the click of a button is the illusion of competence. Exposure to information creates the illusion of competence, and the illusion of competence alters behaviors. But there is a second challenge. I like to call it the 'flat earther' effect. In the business world, most of the information we are exposed to daily through magazines, social media, and even e-learning is either simplistic, purely contextual, or plain wrong. But once exposed to an idea several times, because of cognitive biases, that idea becomes a belief. Even when presented with data that disproves the idea, we tend to stick to our belief because of a different set of cognitive biases. For instance, if we start believing that a certain marketing activity generates a specific result, we will often continue to spend resources on that activity, hoping for the expected result, even when faced with contradicting facts. If I had a dollar for every time a business professional (including myself) accepted that what they believed to be causality was just a correlation but kept doing the same things, I would be driving a much better car. I find it ironic that at a time when we have become capable of collecting and analyzing data at scale, the democratization of content creation and access has also created a context that makes us keep ignoring it. #criticalthinking #datadrivendecisions

Sure. It is about design. It is about how information is turned to something we understand. But in the end it is about impact. It is about the impact we have by communicating with clarity and beauty. It is about the impact to mobilise an audience. It is about helping researchers, scientists, communication specialists and anyone who works with scientific information to transform data into decision making.
