Has the process of hiring a freelance become overcomplicated?🧑💻
Freelancers and hiring managers are often two sides of the same coin.
Some freelancers are ex-CTOs and Engineering Managers.
Lots of hiring managers are freelancers themselves. E.g., Interim CTOs, PMs, Tech Leads etc.
Even those who have never been freelancers are usually empathetic to the candidate's experience.
But, the perception in my freelance network is that hiring processes feel more and more like you're applying to a permanent job.
Since starting in recruitment, I have noticed a significant decrease in the involvement of line managers in the freelance hiring process.
Some symptoms of this change have been noticed by freelancers👇
❌ Slower response on CVs
❌ Recruiters who seemingly have no insight into what the client wants
❌ No feedback after unsuccessful interviews
❌ Over-reliance on generic tech tests
❌ A bidding war on rates (race to the bottom)
Having spoken to thousands of hiring managers, I am aware that recruitment is only a tiny portion of their day job.
But, historically, a good recruiter and a hiring manager can wrap up a freelance hire within 48 hours. So, gathering 50 CVs via a portal and interviewing over 2 weeks doesn't feel like time saved.
Even the internal recruiters I speak with don't really want anything to do with freelance. They are busy enough with the internal roles that they are targeted on.
So, do the new processes really work for anyone involved?
