This is probably one of the craziest things I have seen an open source project do and an instant way to kill it. https://lnkd.in/egYDg5dk Not sure what the developer was thinking but you should never collect any data without a users consent. It is also an excellent example of understanding the risks in your software supply chain and making sure you assess them correctly. We tend to trust that the tools we rely on have our best intentions at heart but is very hard to validate this. #opensource #moq

Does adding sponsors to your open-source project should rely on close-source project ? Developer advocating its integration that no harm is done, since no private information sent, but it is not so protected neither. The idea to have sponsoring your work is great, but at the cost of breaking trust and your builds? #sponsors #opensource
Software Developer, from legacy to cutting-edge, providing solutions in .NET code. If you contact me on my cell phone, I know you got it from an external source that got it without my permission.
With Moq adding SponsorLink to their project, which uses obfuscated code and sends a hashed email address, I've been seeing a lot of comments about it. The main thing is that trust is broken, especially since the implications of SponsorLink weren't mentioned in the patch notes. SponsorLink reads the user's git config, hashes that email address and sends that to a server, where we don't know what it does. We also do not consent to this happening in any way, which may very well be in violation of the GDPR. In development we rely a lot on open-source projects. They save us all a lot of time, which saves the company money. A reason for the developer of Moq adding SponsorLink was because of a lack of contributors and a lack of financial support. While adding an incentive to sponsor is, in a way, understandable, the way this is done is not. So what's the way forward? I would personally love to see the company I work for add a monthly budget to support open-source projects. Let the developers vote on how much they want to see go to which project. Any other thoughts on this?

There are certain reasons why B2B customers tend not to disclose their budgets, especially during the first meetings. Most of them are understandable; - they want to strengthen their negotiation position - their budget highly depends on deliverables and ROI - there are many stakeholders keeping a hand on the wallet, and the budget really depends on internal politics - company representative actually doesn't know the budget - they collect offers while not knowing what they should expect - the count on some discounts, etc BUT Not disclosing the budget, especially among mature businesses, may result in harmful consequences; - overestimating the project; in or decreasing test coverage, feature list, etc - proposing irrelevant solutions (research, PWA vs mobile, etc) - underestimating the scope (can we put registration beyond MVP?) - wrong stack proposed (let's do it with Django!) Honestly? If you have some ballparks in mind, do proper research, find 4-6 reputable vendors, and be transparent about it. It will actually help you save your time and your money.

How do you stop malicious users? And how do you implement usage-based APIs? You can solve both problems with rate limiting. If you're using .NET 7, it's your lucky day. You don't need to install any new libraries. The tools you need are already there. Here's what I used for my implementation: - Pick a rate limit algorithm - Create a partitioned rate limit policy - Apply it on the reverse proxy or specific endpoints Rate limiting by IP works great for unauthenticated users. Use the correct IP address if your API is behind a reverse proxy. Or you might end up rate-limiting your reverse proxy (ouch!). Here's how to implement user-specific rate limiting: https://lnkd.in/dNsiNYve

I recently did a LinkedIn post on ".NET Core API Pagination" that got a lot of attention. Expanding on that, here is a blog post which discusses why pagination is important, the different types of pagination, how to implement them using .NET Core, and the performance implications of each pagination type. Whether you’re a seasoned developer or just starting, this post will provide valuable insights and examples. So why wait?
