In business school, we were taught to follow the "voice of the customer" - build something that actually meets customers' needs. Before building our first hydrogen tank, Bav Roy, David Jaramillo and I spoke with hundreds of people in the industry to understand their needs, and to understand the true bottlenecks in decarbonizing HD transportation. Truck fleets need to decarbonize. Hydrogen enables them to do so while meeting their many needs: refuel quickly, travel far distances, carry heavy payloads, and avoid major utility upgrades at their depots. In the Philippines we are seeing a construction boom in Distribution Centers and humongous warehouses sprouting in and around Manila, the most congested densest city in the world and most of these DCs are converting from straight 10-wheeled 10-15 ton payload 16-pallet trucks to 40-footer 20-40 ton 22 pallet trailer Semi’s to lower transport costs and faster turnaround by unhitching/hitching trailer beds and many of these Semi’s are 6-wheeled short wheelbase. I cannot imagine how they can fit a huge battery pack for long haul and heavy traffic (30 kms one-way can take up to 5 hours to travel in stop and go traffic)
