When your teenager complains, it can be an opportunity to teach important life lessons. What's going on is that your teen is learning how to self-regulate, which is not something that happens overnight or in a straight line. We forget that teens see anywhere from 5 to 7 teachers daily with 30 to 40 other students in a classroom; that's 150 other students at minimum. Remain calm and remind yourself that it is not about you; this is about your teen learning how to decompress at the end of the day. Hint: they are watching you. When you can stay calm, it signals to your teen that it's also safe to calm down. Their brain needs repetition at this age, so it may feel that they got it and then take a step back. It's very normal and part of the learning process.

We often shower our kids - and students - with a myriad of resources so they can solve problems or accomplish specific goals. Unfortunately, most students do not learn to use the tools and strategies they are given. No one teaches them how to extract the most from a session with a tutor or during Office Hours... A resource is a tool we use to accomplish a goal or task. Examples of resources can be time, hardware, money, and people. To use your resources well, you will need two powerful executive functions skills that help us devise solutions while self-monitoring - flexibility and metacognition. We often believe that our children need more of the new solutions and less of what they already have. We look after the most promising solution only to find ourselves disappointed again. Knowing how to use your resources is far more important than having more. We have a program for teens who wish to grow independent and successful individuals. The program offers varying levels of guidance and support. PM us if you would like to schedule an intro session. #parenting #executivefunction #student #efproblems #resources #independentstudent #successfulstudent #family #parentinglife

How many of us step into our work environment and after taking off our coat immediately sit down to a task? Personally, I usually prefer to grab a coffee and have a chat or two with colleagues to ease myself into the working day. Simple Protective Interruptions which put my mind in gear. I believe I owe my pupils the same gentle, easy start to their school day and this is why I place minimal demands during the first 30 minutes in my classroom. I opt for a session in which they choose what they want to do rather than being directed by me to a task with which they may not feel ready to engage. For those who have perhaps had a tricky start to their day for any reason, it provides a way for them to have a bit of time and space to safely transition into school mode. However, this is far from a wasted learning opportunity. Communication, interaction, social skills, turn-taking and self-regulation are just a few of the skills I regularly see in action during this time. I am not suggesting that this is the most suitable way for every single pupil to start their school day as some may feel safer with morning work or an adult directed activity. I do, however, realise how fortunate I am to work in an environment in which I have the agency to facilitate what I believe is in my pupils’ best interests #learning #education #timetable #routines #choice #control #ProtectiveBehaviours
