Heat Transfer Thermal energy transport take place. Mode of heat transfer Conduction involves direct contact between materials. Convection involves the movement of fluid. Radiation involves the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves. Fourier's law of heat transfer : the rate of heat flow to the area and temperature drop as well as inversely professional to the length of the path. Thermal conductivity is a material property that measures how well a material can transfer heat. Recuperative (hot and cold fluid separated by a wall such as shell and tube heat exchanger ) 2. Regenerative ( Matrix are occupied by Hot and Cold fluid alternatively) 3. Mixed type ( Hot and Cold fluids contact each Other directly Such as cooling tower) Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger : Major parts Shell cover Nozzle Tube Tube sheet Tie rod and spacer Flanges Buffer plate Flow path criteria Tube side: fluid of high pressure, high temperature, corrosive, dirt, fouling fluid, gas to be chilled. Shell side: scale forming fluid, high viscous fluid, vapor, liquid NH3 for vapor formation. Basic system of heter transfer : 1. Co-current or parallel flow 2. Counter current flow. 3. Parallel flow and counterflow are two different heat exchanger configurations used to transfer heat from one fluid to another. Parallel Flow: In parallel flow, both the hot and cold fluids flow in the same direction, entering the heat exchanger at one end and exiting at the other end. Heat transfer occurs as the two fluids move parallel to each other along the length of the exchanger. This configuration is simple and easy to construct but is generally less efficient in terms of heat transfer compared to counterflow. Counterflow: In counterflow, the hot and cold fluids flow in opposite directions, entering at opposite ends of the heat exchanger. Heat transfer occurs as the two fluids move counter to each other along the length of the exchanger. Counterflow is typically more efficient than parallel flow because it maintains a greater temperature difference between the two fluids throughout the heat exchange process, leading to better heat transfer. 1-Steam ejector A steam ejector in vacuum distillation is a device designed to create a vacuum by utilizing high-pressure steam to entrain and evacuate gases or vapors. Operating on Bernoulli's principle, the ejector comprises key components: a motive nozzle, a mixing chamber, and a diffuser. The motive nozzle initiates the process by accelerating the steam, effectively reducing its pressure as per Bernoulli's principle. Subsequently, the high-velocity steam enters the mixing chamber, where it entrains and mixes with the gases or vapors targeted for removal. The mixed fluid then progresses through the diffuser, leading to a controlled reduction in velocity and a simultaneous increase in pressure. This dynamic creates a vacuum in the suction line of the ejector, facilitating the evacuation of gases or vapors. In the context of vacuum distillation, a steam ejector is often complemented by a condenser. The condenser plays a crucial role in the process by efficiently cooling and condensing the vapor-laden gases, enabling their conversion back into liquid form. This condensed fluid is then removed from the system. The efficiency of a steam ejector in vacuum distillation hinges on several factors, including the geometric design of the nozzle, the pressure and temperature conditions of the steam and gases, and the overall flow rate.
