The biggest newspaper in Finland wrote an article which explains the additional value that coastal rowing brings to the Olympic program. The aim is to reach a broader group of athletes and an audience that traditional rowing sports doesn’t engage in. Flat water rowing is a quite Western and expensive elitist sport, which most of the world's population cannot engage in due to the costs, coaching, or the lack of suitable facilities, such as training centers and dugout lakes. Here is the link: https://lnkd.in/dRJegxGa The majority of the world's population lives near the sea. In coastal rowing, competitions are held with standardized equipment provided by the event organizer, so rowers do not need to transport their own equipment around the world, and money plays a smaller role in determining the outcome. The decline in the popularity of traditional endurance sports and many new Olympic sports of the 21st century reflect the expectations of athletes and the audience. Coastal beach sprint requires a much broader foundation of various physical and psychological abilities and sports skills. Beach sprint is a fast-paced and unpredictable sport that captivates viewers both on-site and through broadcasts. Performance happens in front of the audience, and the competition (why one is faster at the finish) is easy to understand, even without a long background in the sport. On the other hand, in traditional Olympic sports like flat water rowing, six rowers all row visually in the same way, and differences in the competition seem clear and do not change much during the race, making it difficult for non-rowing enthusiasts to grasp the sport. For those within the sport, these small differences in the rowing technique form the basis and excitement. Nearly artistically executed movement, millions of repetitions of a single stroke that are honed to perfection, create fascination. I find it the most fascinating aspect of the sport, but I understand that seeing these millisecond differences in technique that would help understand the sporting performance is impossible for a person without a rowing background…. In coastal rowing, a spontaneous spectator or anyone following the competition can understand the difference between two rowers in a side-by-side race. One rower is faster on water, another excels at running, another gets a faster start, someone stumbles during landing, loses control of the boat in a wave, surfs better, falls off the seat, falls with the boat, or cannot navigate the buoy correctly due to the sea conditions, or the turn goes long. The situation can change multiple times during the race, and nothing is certain until one hits the buzzer. A lot happens in a short and intense performance. The audience gets to feel excitement and bite their nails until the rowers cross the finish line. And immediately after the athletes and the audience catch their breath, the same thing happens again. Continues in the comments!

Co-Founder of Will It Make The Boat Go Faster? Ltd - Author of ‘Will It Make The Boat Go Faster?’ - Keynote Speaker - Performance Consultant - Olympic Gold Medallist
What sets a high performing team apart from the rest? If you think about it, winners and losers often have the same goal. Every single crew in the 2000 final of our Sydney race wanted that gold. So, what set us apart? 🥇 What made the difference in us clinching gold vs the Aussies, Italians or Croatians? In my opinion, there were two key fundamentals that made the difference from coming last to winning a Gold Medal at the Sydney Olympics (you’ve got to have both): 1) Having a common goal (a "3Ms" goal) 🎯 2) Fostering the high-performance culture and behaviours that would get us there. 🤝 Delighted to share more fully what I mean by these in my new article below 👇👇: https://bit.ly/4atKhkU In 1998 we were a rubbish team, by 2000 we were a good team. You've got to work on the team as much as the outcome. #team #goal #gold #performance #olympics Will It Make The Boat Go Faster?
