Electrofuel (eFuel) producer Infinium opened the world’s first commercial-scale eFuel facility in Texas last month. The Bill Gates-backed startup provides low-carbon eFuels that can help decarbonize aviation and other hard-to-abate industries. ✈️ Infinium’s eFuels are synthetic fuels made from captured carbon dioxide and green hydrogen obtained from renewable power. They can be used as a drop-in fuel to power heavy transport instead of fuels created from petroleum products. ✈️ The project, known as Project Pathfinder, has this facility in Corpus Christi as a key component. Project Pathfinder incorporates Infinium’s fuel production technology with a patented scientific process to effectively produce and distribute eFuels. ✈️ Project Pathfinder also serves as Infinium’s eFuels Center of Excellence, a research center providing insights to guide future projects. The company has over 12 additional projects under development across four continents. ✈️ Infinium CEO Robert Schuetzle said the facility gives the company “end-to-end control of the eFuels production process [that] gives us a constant feedback loop” for future projects. Infinium’s eFuels for aviation are known as eSAF (sustainable aviation fuel). ✈️ One of Infinium’s customers is American Airlines, who agreed to purchase an unspecified amount of eSAF in November 2023. Breakthrough Energy Catalyst has also invested $75 million into Project Roadrunner: Infinium’s second facility slated to open in 2026. #climatetech #efuels #infinium #texas #corpuschristi #sustainableaviation #americanairlines #billgates #saf #sustainability
