The evolving modern workplace is increasingly characterized by age diversity due to an aging population and changing attitudes towards employment in later life. Over the past several decades, citizens have challenged outdated ideologies and are actively remaining career-engaged well into their advanced age. In America, the number of adults aged 65 and older in the labor force has doubled in 35 years and is projected to reach 13 million by 2024. Access Consultant | Public Speaker | Autism Trainer | #ActuallyAutistic | Passionate about Accessibility
"They are basically unemployable." This was the final statement made in a conversation between two managers. The 'they' that they were talking about was autistic people. Making statements like this shows just how far away we are from having society truly understand autism. The reality is that, whilst some autistic people might be unable to work, that doesn't mean we are unemployable. It is just that the world of employment isn't accessible for us. We currently have to navigate: 👉 Inaccessible recruitment processes, 👉 Unwritten workplace rules, 👉 Non-inclusive policies, 👉 and more. So rather than having the view that we are unemployable, employers need to recognise that workplaces need to change in order to be accessible for us to thrive in work. #AutismAcceptance #LivedExperience #AutismAndMe #Accessibility #Employment #NationalInclusionWeek __________ Want to find out how to make your organisation more accessible for autistic people? This #NationalCareersWeek, let's shift the conversation towards creating equitable opportunities for all individuals in the workforce. 💼 The recent publication of the Buckland Review of Autism Employment outlined how only 3 in 10 working age autistic people are in employment, compared to 5 in 10 for all disabled people and 8 in 10 for non-disabled people. As a result, we're continuing to highlight the critical importance of creating inclusive pathways to employment for autistic people. I came across a statistic that only 16% of autistic adults are in full time employment. How can that be? And the figure has not changed much since 2007 despite the increased awareness of neurodiversity. Perhaps there is something about the modern workplace that makes it difficult for autistic people to stay in work. And then there are the challenges of getting through the recruitment phase.

In the United States, the unemployment rate for autistic people is 85%, yet autistic professionals can be up to 140% more productive than the typical employee when properly matched to jobs. This Harvard Business Review article helps explain why this rich talent pool is being overlooked, and how businesses can build an inclusive workplace: https://loom.ly/3cayXmY #CelebrateDifferences #AutismAwarenessMonth #ExperienceCounts

The #BucklandReview, which was launched on 28th February 2024, was a fantastic step in the right direction toward #Neuroinclusion in our economy and in our workplaces. It lays out the significance of being more inclusive and hiring autistic staff members, and what the benefits are, of which there are many. The #BucklandReview demonstrates a "How To" guide on employing autistic adults into work. The biggest step - doing it! It's not as difficult as you may think! At #AutimaticUK we take the risk away from hiring autistic employees. We coach, train, upskill and develop autistic talent for companies so you don't have to implement time-consuming internal policies first. You can work with someone within a week. We work alongside your HR team to help develop your own internal practices and support you to become more inclusive. We also build awareness around #AutismEmployment. Continuing on our #BucklandReview spotlight, is number 12! "12. Engage with the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, advising on the benefits autistic candidates can bring to businesses, how to remove barriers to recruiting them, and how these improved processes can be applied to the recruitment of all candidates. Explain how this will produce better matches and improved business performance. Share with the Confederation and individual recruitment agencies strong case histories of successful autistic staff that they can use in conversations with client employers." Always remember, diversity brings innovation 💡 #AutismAtWork #NeuroinclusionNow
