What you're seeing here is an automated fiber placement process being performed by the Mongoose Hybrid machine from Ingersoll Machine Tools. Can I do ArcDED/WAAM with a cobot? Of course! I'm not very good at it yet but was thrilled to be able to "print" my first simple structures. 😀 😀 😀 Arc Directed Energy Deposition (ArcDED), also known as Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is a process where you 3D print parts using a robot and welder. In this case I used a Universal Robots UR20 and a basic manual weld torch attached to the arm. These first results weren't great, but weren't horrible either as you'll see at the end of the video. The cool thing is that it's not that hard to do. Most ArcDED development is focused on large organizations, but I could see small and medium manufacturers implementing it with their existing equipment to quickly print near-net-shape parts.
