In 1985, Rupert Murdoch became a US citizen to satisfy the legal requirement at the time that only US citizens were permitted to own US television stations. Online video is the new TV. Without the same regulation. Over 100 million Americans use TikTok every month for entertainment, commerce, and it's where 14% of American adults say they get their news according to Pew Research. The activism stoked by TikTok this week, whereby tweens and teens were calling their government representative after receiving an in-app alert to do so, may have had the unintended impact to remind Congress of the company's unfettered influence, and the power it can wield when it wants to. If Biden does sign the bill as he's stated he intends to do, Bytedance will then have to comply with new US government regulation. Don't comply, and only then the ban would come into effect. I don't think this regulation stops in the US. More countries other than India which has imposed regulation since 2020 that impacts TikTok, will follow suit.

One of my major takeaways from creator response to this article is their lack of understanding around data privacy implications and possible foreign threat. I urge everyone to understand both sides. In the meantime, we’ll wait with bated breath to see if gov manages to take action this go ‘round.
