A very incredible career first last night after being an invited guest on behalf of our wholesale partner James Clay to the annual Independence Day Party at The American Embassy in London. Athletic was the alcohol free beer of choice and was flying out. Spoke to many people who were blown away by its quality. The comeback trail: How Williams’ new commercial strategy is winning over sponsors. Really enjoyed this article from BlackBook Motorsport where they have interviewed Williams Racing Commercial Director, James Bower. The interview discusses the team’s partnership strategy and the work they are doing to secure new partnerships and maximise their current partnerships. Really interesting to hear James’ thoughts on some of their key selling points such as brand equity, trustworthiness, independence, honesty and bravery. I particularly enjoyed this snippet, where he discusses the teams responsible for securing partnerships, mentioning the commercial solutions and data and insights teams that support their salespeople. A structure that is reflective of other f1 teams: “People often think [you need to] get lots of salespeople to get lots of partners, but it’s more like a driver model. You need people around the drivers to make them successful. You only want a handful of salespeople, but you need really good people around them in terms of proposals, data and insights, and understanding the landscape and how you’re targeting brands.” I love the comparison to the driver model and how support teams are just as important. It really feels like F1 teams are turning up the dial when it comes to sponsorship this season. With big brands joining the grid, memorable activations (Williams’ Duracell Bunny and Ferrari’s HP sticking out) and Mastercard set to also be joining the party, its an exciting time for sponsorship in Formula 1.
