#ACTON25 - Leveraging the learnings of six startup generations (part 10): All products deserve a second life - that’s the principle of the circular economy. Berlin-based re-commerce pioneer momox has turned trading pre-loved media and fashion items into a successful business. Founded by Christian Wegner in 2006, momox has bought and sold more than 300 million articles since launch and has surpassed €300 million in annual revenues. Be it the next trailblazing unicorn, or the hidden industry champion — there is no one-size-fits-all journey to long-term value. Behind every time and each pioneer there is a unique story worth telling. As part of Acton Capital's 25th anniversary, we aim to tell those pioneer stories again for passing on the learnings of prior startup generations to the next – stay tuned! https://lnkd.in/dyKzGQ3

In Ethiopia's startup ecosystem, the headlines are often dominated by exciting launches. But what happens after the fanfare fades? The challenging journeys that follow rarely receive the same attention, and stories of failure are even less likely to be shared publicly. Here at Shega, we believe there's valuable learning to be found in both successes and setbacks. That's why we're launching a new series called Shega Forensics, which delves into the failures of startups, products, and business models in our ecosystem. In our first edition, we sit down with Berbera Market, an e-commerce platform that recently shut down its operations. By understanding their experiences, we aim to shed light on the complex challenges faced by Ethiopian startups and equip others with valuable insights for navigating their own journeys. We are grateful to the Berbera team for sharing their story with us. https://lnkd.in/dcR9R4kj

There are so many lessons to be learned I don't know where to start. Firstly I want to state my respect to Mr. Bereket Getnet for a bold move to share his story with all of us. This is a true trait of what it means to be an Entrepreneur. It's not about showcasing how exceptional one needs to be to become an Entrepreneur or how one needs to just "keep on pushing" on their project until "success". Such dramatic romanticism of what it means to be an Entrepreneur (mainly from academia, Governments, Family/Friends, Self help books and movies) is one of the reasons many fail and never raise. The corner stone of what it means to be an Entrepreneur?: Be pragmatic! 1. "Should I pivot my business as it's not working?" 2. " Should I close it down"? 3. "Maybe I shouldn't try to raise a 2nd round of $ if my valuation is the same or lower; considering I will be diluting the shares of people who trusted me to invest in the first round; maybe looking for other options"? and the most important question of them all " Should I care so much about what people think about me or should i DO what I know it's the right decision for my business with evidence showcasing why?" From Investors to your consumers, contrary to popular beliefs, you would be surprised to note, many people understand common sense; actually that is what they are looking for. They want transparency and more importantly; they want a person that makes a decision. That's a company worth investing in and a partner worth working with. A good lesson for us All; in every aspect of Entrepreneurship.

Check out how I was inspired to create ShutUpKaren.net, an E-commerce site showcasing merchandise that humorously echoes the "Shut Up, Karen!" meme. By leveraging our existing digital infrastructure and integrating a print-on-demand service, we were able to launch the site in just one day and celebrate our first sale within 48 hours. This experience underscored the boundless potential awaiting digital marketers willing to think outside the box, utilize technology, and ride the wave of cultural trends. In a world where ideas are the new currency, being able to swiftly monetize them is the modern-day gold rush. #digitalmarketing #ecommerce #mememarketing #entrepreneur #startups What are your thoughts on monetizing memes?
