Those who have travelled through it would know that for the purpose of de-congestion of traffic and smooth movement, this tunnel was conceptualised. But during the peak hours same congestion of traffic is encountered in this tunnel shows the ignorance of authorities responsible for its execution. The tunnel outlet and inlet on ring road is the perfect example of the non-consideration of the design aspects and it seems without any traffic flow studies model. Two lane 90 degree bend creates all the barriers for traffic movement during peak hours and now this problem in seepage and structure. The lesson to be learnt is that don’t spend on the gimmicks at these structures but spend time and money for the purpose they have been built for and give time to ENGINEERS without caring for the credit to “INAUGRATE”.

Superelevation on the horizontal curve is one of the most important features in the construction of the roads. It is very essential to provide superelevation in roads for the safe movement of vehicles on the curved portion of the roads OR Superelevation is a method of infrastructure construction used in roadway curves where the outer edge of the pavement is raised above the inner edge. An aspect of the vertical alignment or “profile” of a road viewed in cross-section, it’s an important safety element in the design criteria of any road with curves. 💠Factor affecting the the design of superelevation 🔸The design speed of vehicle on the road. 🔸Friction. 🔸Maximum allowable superelevation. 🔸Permissible centrifugal ratio. 💠Advantages of providing superelevation 🔹It permits high speed to be maintained on a curve as on a straight, without any danger and thus results in an increased volume of traffic. 🔹The vehicle keeps to the correct side. 🔹Superelevation less the danger skidding. 🔹Superelevation of the pressure on the wheels is equally distributed load on the road.

Did you know that the standard theory for design of superelevation is wrong? Road design codes for superelevation consider comfort and/or lateral sliding with passenger cars, typically analyzed with a simple point mass model established in the 1930's. On most of todays roads, superelevation should instead be designed to prevent lethal rollover crashes with heavy goods trailers, having high centre of gravity* and significant rearward amplification of lateral forces. With relevant analysis, the correct rate of superelevation for optimal safety is typically about twice as high as with obsolete traditional analysis 1930:s style. *In traditional (=obsolete) design of superelevation, the vehicle's centre of gravity is not even considered. Furthermore, the possibility of lower road friction in the outer wheel path than in the inner wheel path is also neglected. Also this simplification lead to underestimated superelevation also with respect to lateral sliding of the vehicles.
