🇨🇦🍁 Reflecting on Canada Day: Embracing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion 🍁🇨🇦 Canada Day is a time to celebrate the rich mosaic of cultures and peoples that make this nation unique. However, we must recognize that for many Indigenous communities, this day may hold a different significance. Turtle Island, the land we now call Canada, has been the ancestral home of Indigenous Peoples long before the concept of Canada even existed. While we celebrate the achievements and diversity of our country, let us also take a moment to reflect on the often-troubled history between the Canadian state and the original inhabitants of these lands. Many Indigenous Peoples have not fully aligned themselves with the Canadian identity, as the legacy of colonialism and the ongoing struggles for self-determination and reconciliation remain deeply felt. Some are not Canadians but are rights and treaty holders on this land that we are guests on. It is crucial that we honor and uplift the voices, stories, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples, not just on Canada Day, but every day. Their resilience, wisdom, and stewardship of the land are integral to the fabric of this nation, and their rightful place as the first peoples of Turtle Island must be recognized and celebrated. In this spirit, let us come together to acknowledge the complex and nuanced perspectives on this day, and strive to build a more inclusive, equitable, and just society that truly reflects the diversity and the deep-rooted history of this land and its peoples. Wishing everyone a reflective and inclusive Canada Day. 🇨🇦❤️ —- Artistic version of the national flag using native motifs and style. Indigenous peoples in Canada have made invaluable contributions that have shaped our country's cultural heritage, environmental stewardship, and social fabric. Their rich and diverse cultures, languages, and traditions are integral to Canada's identity. Indigenous peoples have enriched our society in countless ways, from the creation of intricate artwork and crafts to the preservation of traditional knowledge and languages. Their deep connection to the land has led to sustainable land management practices that benefit not only their communities but also the broader environment. Indigenous peoples have also played a vital role in Canada's history, serving as skilled hunters, traders, and diplomats. Their resilience in the face of colonization and their ongoing efforts to preserve their cultures and traditions are a testament to their strength and perseverance. As we celebrate National Indigenous History Month, let us honour and recognize the contributions of Indigenous peoples and commit to learning from their wisdom and experiences. Together, we can build a more inclusive and respectful future for all Canadians. #NIPD2024, #NationalIndigenousHistoryMonth, #IndigenousContributions, #aspengrovecounselling

Earlier today, I wrote a piece on my personal page with some personal reflections on the appropriateness or otherwise of 26th January, as Australia's "national day". I've long held the view - many years before I became aware of the feelings of Australia's First Peoples about the appropriateness of the date - that using the anniversary of the foundation of Sydney (which, claims that it actually represents the anniversary of the creation of Australian citizenship in 1948 notwithstanding, is what the vast majority of Australians think that the 26th January commemorates) as a celebration of Australia as a nation is a bad choice. It reinforces what I've long felt is an excessively Sydney-centric interpretation of Australia's post-1778 history and culture. Most nations who have 'national days' - and especially those nations who were once colonies of other nations - have as their national days, a day which their citizens identify as symbolizing them ceasing to be a colony, rather than of becoming one, as the 26th January does. To the many people who I know will disagree with me about this, I want to say, I love this country as much as you do, and I'm no less proud of being an Australian than you are. But I don't need to commemorate the founding of Sydney to prove it: and I don't see why I should be expected to. The article is also now on my website, here: https://lnkd.in/gHwtpkN5 - along with a map of 'Australia' that omits NSW, Queensland and Victoria, rather than Tasmania (as all too many maps purporting to be of 'Australia' still do). It was of course drawn up by Abel Tasman, the first European to "discover" Tasmania (or Van Diemen's Land, as he called it), as well as New Zealand - 128 years before Captain James Cook, aided by Tasman's maps, "discovered" the site of present-day Sydney Airport, an event which the Sydney-centric view of Australian history still regards as the [European] "discovery" of Australia. Thankyou Ratih Luhur for finding and posting this map.

🇦🇺The Importance of Keeping the Name "Australia Day"🇦🇺 Australia Day is a significant national holiday celebrated on the 26th of January each year. It marks the arrival of the First Fleet of British ships in 1788 and the establishment of the colony of New South Wales. Lately, there has been a growing discussion about changing the name of Australia Day due to the concerns raised by some sections of society. However, it is essential to understand the reasons why we should keep the name "Australia Day" and continue to celebrate this historic occasion. Historical Significance: Australia Day holds immense historical significance as it commemorates the foundation of modern Australia. It acknowledges the rich and diverse history of this land, including both the Indigenous heritage and the arrival of European settlers. By retaining the name, we honour the past and recognise the journey that has shaped the nation we are today. National Unity: Australia Day brings together people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and communities. It is a symbol of national unity and a day to celebrate the shared values and achievements of all Australians. Changing the name might dilute the sense of collective identity and undermine the inclusive spirit that Australia Day represents. Tradition and Continuity: Traditions play a significant role in fostering a sense of belonging and maintaining cultural identity. Australia Day has been celebrated on the 26th of January for many years, and it has become an integral part of our national identity. By keeping the name, we uphold the tradition and ensure continuity for future generations. Reflecting on Progress: While it is crucial to acknowledge and address the concerns raised about the date's significance to Indigenous Australians, Australia Day also serves as an opportunity for reflection and growth as a nation. It allows us to engage in conversations about reconciliation, acknowledging the past, and working towards a more inclusive and equitable future. Australia Day is a day of national pride, unity, and celebration. The name itself holds historical significance, cultural heritage, and represents the shared values of all Australians. While discussions about the date and its impact on Indigenous communities are necessary, changing the name would undermine the essence of this important day. By keeping the name "Australia Day," we honour our past, celebrate our present, and strive for a better future together. #Entrepreneurship #businessownership #manufacturing #engineering #mining #miningindustry #transport #logistics #construction #lawyer #accountant #businessowner #businessowners #software #softwaredevelopment #softwaredeveloper #mergersandacquisitions
