Over 300,000 people of Middle Eastern or North African (MENA) descent live in Michigan. In Wayne County alone, 7.8% of residents, at minimum, identify as MENA. And yet, MENA voices are not protected by the Federal Voting Rights Act. That means, MENA communities are subject to packing and cracking, forms of gerrymandering. Packing is when a large number of voters from the same community are pooled together in one voting district. This gives the community’s vote a lot of power in one district but very minimal in the others. Cracking is when voters from the same community are divided across a large number of voting districts. This makes it really hard for the community to have any voting power because it is so diluted. Passing the Michigan Voting Rights Act would provide MENA communities with protection! #CountMENAinMichigan and support our voting power.
