If you're in a small job market, you can't rely on just applying to open jobs. That's the route to 12 month job search. If you want to get a job much faster... you need to ditch the large market job search: 1. It starts with jobs 2. You apply or get a referral into a process 3. If you get the interview, you ramp up practice 4. If you don't get the job, you move to the next one The small market job search flips that on its head: 1. It starts with companies 2. You learn a lot about them 3. Then you build connections in 4. You turn those into interviews, and rock them 5. If you don't succeed at first, you keep trying again It's a 180 - but it dramatically shortens your search timeline. For all the details on how to build these connections and create demand, check out the deep dive: https://lnkd.in/evQeJZGB P.S. How do you handle the small market search?
Bonus: How do you build these connections? It starts with your second degree connections! You ask your first degree connections to them. So get asking. (The whole rest of the process in the piece.)
What also works is to learn new highly demanded skills. Learn LLMs, AI. Or if you are a former engineer (my case), learn and practice new stack/technologies and build projects in your portfolio. Last time I spent 4months looking for a Senior Product Manager / Head of Product jobs... And I experienced dozens of rejections and very unpolite /unprofessional behavior or not hearing from companies at all. I don't want to experience it again.
Shifting focus from just applying to engaging with companies boosts job search success, Aakash Gupta
Great insights, Aakash! Another key difference between job searching in large and small markets is the role of community engagement. In small markets, actively participating in local events, industry meetups, and community organizations can significantly enhance your visibility and network. This can open up opportunities that may not be publicly advertised, as smaller companies often rely on word-of-mouth and personal connections for hiring. Conversely, in larger markets, leveraging online platforms and professional networks such as LinkedIn plays a more crucial role due to the broader and more competitive landscape.
