- To be a successful new manager, one of your top skills must be coaching. That's when you work with an employee to help them rethink their approach to relationships and work so they can make progress towards specific short-term goals that you define together. Research tells us coaching boosts performance and helps employees feel more confident and motivated. The coaching process is pretty simple. When working with an employee, you first need focus. You can't work on everything at once so pick one or two skill areas in need of improvement as a place to start. For instance, let's say your employee has a need to improve their presentation skills. Great, the next step is to assess the current state of their ability in the chosen area.
