An overview of industrial automation
- [Instructor] The concept of industrial automation means the use of technologies and automatic devices for controlling operations and processes that you often see in factories and manufacturing settings. Now, the essence of industrial automation is that you replace the human presence and human thinking with computers, robots, machines, and other devices. They simply do the work instead of humans and operators within industrial settings. The word automation is derived from Greek words. Auto means self, and the word matos, which means moving. Automation, therefore, is the mechanism for systems that move by itself. Industrial automation systems can be a simple process, like counting the number of cans on a conveyor belt; or they can be very complex in nature, having a large number of processes and devices happening at the same time.
