- It's easy for us all to take global telecommunications for granted. For all of my life, telephones have existed, and dialing a family member or friend anywhere in the world has been a normal unremarkable activity. For those that lived through the emergence of telephones, at first, it must have appeared magical. As telephones and then data transmission became more commonplace, our notions of distance and time changed. Two points on the planet could be connected without delay. Communicating almost anywhere around the globe became instantaneous. Even today, it's still worth appreciating this remarkable human achievement. Telephones, telegraphs, faxes, and other early uses of data transmission would of course only be a tease at what was to come in the communication space in the second half of the 20th century.
