- [Instructor] Excel has a category of functions 2 called text functions, 3 and they allow us to manipulate data at the character level. 4 And in the list that we're seeing here, 5 it's nearly 700 rows, 6 an organization has decided to revamp its ID scheme. 7 They're currently just using three-digit numbers, 8 in some cases, two-digit numbers, 9 and we're seeing them in column D. 10 And because this company has expanded rapidly 11 into nearly all the states, they want to create a new ID 12 that includes the state code 13 along with the individual's initials, 14 in other words, the first character 15 of the first name and last name, 16 and the current ID as well. 17 And in the blue box to the right, 18 you see what we're trying to get at here. 19 An example of doing it manually is right here. 20 So you get some sense of what we're trying to do, 21 but we're not going to be doing them manually 22 'cause we've got…
