- [Instructor] Because the SUM function is so widely used in Excel, there are two icons that you could consider using and also a keystroke shortcut. The AVERAGE function is also widely used, and although it doesn't really have a shortcut, there are some techniques that you might want to use as you work with that function as well. In this worksheet, we want to get a total in cell G2. Anytime you want to add up numbers from the left, you could take advantage of either the icon found on the Home tab, the far right. It's the Greek letter sigma. It's referred to as AutoSum, although we don't see that term there. Click this once, you see what Excel is about to do, you can press Enter. And after working with this for a bit, you'll realize it's practically foolproof. We can double-click that icon and it gets the job done.
