Mitigation through permits and checklists

- Whether you use permits or formal checklists having a form that's required to be filled out can be a great way to remind people in the field of any unique or important steps that you don't want them to skip or miss. A permit and a checklist are essentially the same thing. Both are documents that could be paper or digital that contain a list of steps or requirements. The document forces people to stop and think about the task. It reminds them of requirements that need to be completed and it asks them to take a minute to verify that those steps have been followed. The permit adds a layer of insurance by requiring the person completing the form to have it reviewed and approved by another person. That could be a safety manager, a site superintendent or some other project authority.
