- Just this past year, I have found it harder and harder to have fun at work. And I'm a seasoned veteran, my own boss, and a company of one. Research tells us that having fun at work improves the bonds that support employee loyalty, commitment, and retention. But lately, it feels like fun can be a luxury, and nothing is worse than forced fun when employees are coerced into bonding and it backfires. So what can a manager do to create a culture where fun isn't a taboo word? Well, fun can be personal, subjective, and different based on upbringing or cultural experiences. For example, one person's happy hour is another person's minefield. So ask employees to share their ideas on how to have fun. Use an anonymous survey tool if necessary, but make sure you solicit feedback from every member of your team and revisit this topic regularly. Not every manager has a budget for fun.
