Youth Developer

Child Trends, Equimundo-US, and the Latin-American Youth Center (LAYC) received federal funding through the Personal Responsibility Education Innovative Strategies (PREIS) program to implement and evaluate the Many Ways of Being sexual health program with youth of all gender identities ages 15- 19 in the Washington, DC area. The evaluation will test the program’s effectiveness at promoting healthy relationships and communication skills, equitable gender norms, and sexual and reproductive health. Many Ways of Being, combines the curricula of two well-established programs, Manhood 2.0 and Sisterhood 2.0. Both curricula have been previously tested and have shown promising results around increasing youth’s confidence in communicating about safe sex with partners, greater social competence and perceived social support, and improved knowledge of contraceptive methods. This is a Part-time position working approximately 29 hours/week Monday-Friday.

LAYC/MMYC’s mission is to empower a diverse population of youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood, through multicultural, comprehensive, and innovative programs that address youths' social, academic, and career needs. To achieve that mission, LAYC/MMYC provides services and opportunities to approximately 5,000 individuals annually to support academic achievement, promote healthy behaviors, and guide youth toward successful adulthood. LAYC/MMYC also conducts advocacy and public policy work to broaden opportunities for youth.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Meet regularly with the coordinator and Youth Engagement and retention Specialist to ensure that program outputs and outcomes are being met and to discuss program fidelity, challenges, and successes.
  • Recruit youth through communication and outreach strategies. In Year 3 (FY2024), 400 students will need to complete the program.
  • Facilitate the curricula weekly at multiple sites and assist with coordinating the MWB curriculum (the intervention group) and Career Readiness Curriculum (the control group) sessions.
  • Implement strategies to retain youth in the program, including calls, texts, emails and in-person follow-ups with youth and make sure that these recruitment efforts are being documented appropriately.
  • Consistent documentation and Data keeping as Grant requires all facilitators to uphold.
  • Interview, hire, and support youth from previous program cohorts to be ambassadors in their schools and communities, promoting the program and learning public health education skills.
  • Ensure that all required paperwork is entered into ETO data system, Child Trends data systems (REDCap), and Microsoft SharePoint.
  • Provide support to the entire PREIS LAYC team to ensure all aspects of this grant are met successfully. This would include but is not limited to the Program Manager, Program Coordinator, Program Curriculum Facilitators and the Youth Engagement and Retention Specialist.
  • Maintain good rapport with external partners Equimundo and Child Trends on this project.
  • Maintain good rapport with school partners including school personnel.
  • Attend Sexual and Reproductive outreach events, per team requirements.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of youth development experience; school-based experience is a plus.
  • Experience working with youth in a group educational setting; background in conducting participatory learning programs a plus.
  • Knowledge/background in sexual health and comfort in talking about sex and reproduction.
  • Bilingual or fluent/proficient: English and Spanish required .

  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of community and local resources.
  • Flexible schedule, including occasional evenings for school events.
  • Ability to work well and communicate with culturally diverse populations.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Complete criminal and child abuse/neglect clearances.
  • Flexible, energetic, positive individual with commitment to youth development in a high quality, respectful environment.
  • LAYC/MMYC requires the COVID-19 vaccine of all its employees. You will be asked to provide proof of vaccination at the time of your interview and at your onboarding .

Physical Requirements

This is largely a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small objects up to 10 lbs. May require the ability to travel locally and/or regionally.
