About The Role

The primary function of Warehouse Operations Supervisor position is to coordinate and participate in the loading, unloading and movement of freight. Position may also interact with customers and may perform minor maintenance on equipment.

Job Scope:

Work for this position is typically governed by established standard operating procedures and situations are generally routine. Job is made somewhat complex by the requirements to research improperly marked freight, to ensure balanced loads and to coordinate the work of others.

Communication/Customer Contact:

Communication skills are necessary as the position interacts and directs other employees and may interact with customers, vendors, contractors and/or suppliers. Contacts are typically face-to-face but may be via telephone and email. Communication is rarely about confidential information.

Supervision/Management:

Position is supervisory in that it provides daily work direction and coordination to other warehouse personnel.

What you’ll do: (this list is not all inclusive)

  • Responsible for ensuring trailers get stripped in a timely manner by coordinating the work with direct reports and participating in the process if needed.
  • Coordinate with direct reports the loading and unloading of trucks, vans, flatbed trucks, box trucks or tractor-trailers.
  • Coordinate the moving of freight around yard and warehouse for staff that will be using a forklift or other moving equipment.
  • Ensure that freight is loaded, unloaded, palletized, and marked appropriately.
  • Complete appropriate delivery/manifest paperwork.
  • Responsible for communicating with carrier(s) so that trailers arrive in a timely manner.
  • Updating computer systems with appropriate data.
  • Examine freight for damage, overage, shortage, etc.; record any variance.
  • Assist customers or other staff as necessary.
  • Train and orient newly-hired personnel.
  • Provides input on hiring new personnel and performance management of existing staff.

Secondary Duties:

  • Delegate the minor vehicle/equipment/facility inspection, maintenance, and cleaning.
  • Warehouse spills and clean up.
  • Fill in for dispatch as appropriate.
  • Fill in for Warehouse Manager in their absence. Those duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Coordinating which trailers are to be delivered from the Port (voyage planning).
  • Updating necessary computer systems.
  • Complete appropriate delivery/manifest paperwork
  • Sending alerts to other Terminals for next day deliveries.
  • Other duties as assigned.

You have these skills:

  • Ability to operate a forklift.
  • Ability to drive a variety of vehicles in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Good verbal communication and customer service skills (in English).
  • Ability to read and write English in order to complete paperwork.
  • Good listening skills.
  • Must exercise good judgment, decision making and focus.
  • Must be conscientious and aware of safety procedures and issues.
  • Ability to use radio, telephone, and computer.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Ability to block and brace loads on a truck, flatbed truck, box truck, tractor trailer and in containers.
  • Knowledge of warehouse equipment usage and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of good lifting techniques.

And these qualifications:

  • High school education is required.
  • One to two years of relevant experience is required.
  • Or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the necessary qualifications to successfully perform the duties of the position.
  • Forklift Certification
  • Hazardous Materials Certification

Extra credit if you have:

  • Freight handling and commodities experience helpful.
  • Medical card preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to push or pull heavy loads using equipment like a dolly or a hand truck (up to 200 pounds).
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Must be able to operate all equipment in warehouse or in a vehicle, which may include grasping, climbing, bending, handling, reaching, fingering, feeling/touching and repetitive motions of the hands and feet.

Work Environment:

Work is typically performed in an office/desk environment but may also be conducted in the warehouse or outside in the elements. Exposure to exhaust fumes is likely. Conditions may also include exposure to environmental noise. This position is a night shift position.
