Vice President, U.S. Market Transformation & Development (East)

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a global, nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., working to improve environmental sustainability, human health, and resilience in the built environment through its programs and rating systems including LEED. The Vice President is a proven leader who will manage a team of regional directors and market-based staff in the U.S. East geography. This role will involve building the team’s capacity by coaching and empowering staff to grow in areas of strength and delivering solid people and client management skills. The VP works in close partnership with the other growth-focused teams at USGBC, including membership, marketing and communications, advocacy and policy and client solutions, while supporting cross-functional coordination organization-wide

The Vice President, U.S. Market Transformation & Development reports to the Managing Director, U.S. Market Transformation & Development and works collaboratively with organizational leadership and the U.S. Market Transformation and Development (U.S. MTD) team to achieve sustained growth while increasing regional engagement, influence, and impact across the country. The VP elevates USGBC and GBCI brands through effective market transformation strategies which include market development and sales, community building and engagement, and partnerships and fundraising, all aligned with the goals and strategy of the organization and Chief Growth Officer. Further, this position will develop a five-year strategic plan for the U.S. MTD team in collaboration with the Managing Director and Director of Operations and Enablement. The team’s current 3-year outcome goals are:

  1. Grow our client base by providing leading edge solutions and market information.
  2. Optimize team function for efficiency, scale, and impact.
  3. Have a knowledgeable and skilled team to meet the needs of our markets.
  4. Maximize net profit through key revenue streams..

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Advance USGBC’s mission in the U.S. East region by increasing the adoption of high-value green building tools and services, expanding and strengthening engagement and partnership, and maximizing access to knowledge and market leadership opportunities
  • Lead the planning, development, and execution of a U.S. growth strategy for increasing brand awareness and value, and adoption of products and services in alignment with U.S. MTD’s departmental strategy and objectives, and organizational strategic plan
  • Ownership of team KPIs and accountability to meet or exceed goals
  • Maintain and share a deep understanding of the needs, priorities and expectations of existing and prospective customers through engagement with key stakeholders to inform growth strategy and priority setting for product development and optimization
  • Drive membership and mutually beneficial partnerships to advance USGBC’s regional presence and influence among industry leaders, policymakers, peer organizations, and stakeholders
  • Develop a sponsorship strategy that aligns with organizational priorities for mission, program and market transformation
  • Contribute to USGBC-sponsored national (e.g. Greenbuild) and regional conferences and events including both planning and production. This includes organizing speakers, sponsors and volunteers to deliver keynotes, leading sessions and hosting tours.
  • Serve as a dynamic and passionate spokesperson representing USGBC, GBCI and specific products and services at relevant industry events and meetings
  • Represent the Chief Growth Officer, Managing Director and department in leadership role both internally and externally
  • Contribute relevant content in support of marketing and communication strategies to drive market transformation and development efforts
  • Collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies and other policymakers to advance supportive policies, including those that are focused on access to capital (Green/Sustainability Bonds) and high-performance green building and sustainability technologies
  • Attract, develop, inspire, empower, and retain a diverse, high-performing team of regional market development professionals, establishing clear priorities, success metrics, and program objectives as part of visionary and hands-on leadership
  • Review the department's organizational structure and deploy adjustments in coordination with the Managing Director to optimize functionality and efficiency
  • Support the development of sales, communications and other core competencies with staff to expand the bench of leadership regionally
  • Lead U.S. MT&D in sales enablement and/or market transformation strategy and implementation
  • Lead U.S. MT&D team in at least two, 3-year market sector campaigns

Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • 15+ years’ experience in market development, real estate, green building and/or sustainable development industry
  • Executive level experience managing and supervising staff in a remote work environment
  • Direct experience working in business or nonprofit growth, sales, development, member engagement, events and planning
  • Proven track record of successful strategy implementation of market development/sales OR market transformation/community engagement
  • Robust experience with client relations and support
  • Strong interpersonal skills including empathy and respect for others, engaging in active listening, and building effective working relationships
  • Demonstrated leadership in managing and developing staff teams at a high level of excellence
  • Knowledge and experience in the green building industry as demonstrated by work on projects certified by GBCI or holding GBCI credentials, or ability to earn a LEED credential within 12 months of employment
  • Passion and commitment to green building marketplace transformation by encouraging and accelerating U.S. market interventions that aim to alter market behavior by removing identified barriers and leveraging opportunities to further the internalization of green building as a matter of standard practice
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Self-starter, detail-oriented, organized, and able to prioritize
  • Demonstrated ability to responsibly manage multiple projects and timelines simultaneously and delivering expected outcomes
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to think systematically and plan, excellent with meeting deadlines

  • This position may be based out of the headquarters location in Washington, DC or remote
  • Full Time, permanent, salaried, benefits-eligible, exempt status
  • Approximately 25% travel expectation with full participation at Greenbuild, our annual conference
