Staff Chemist

Plant location, 1880 Fairlawn Dr., Tuscaloosa, LA 35401

Hours 8-5 M-F, some travel required

The Staff Chemist is the focal point of chemistry knowledge at Gaylord’s Tuscaloosa DMSO manufacturing facility. The person in this role will provide technical support and practical advice within the organization, to support Gaylord’s commercial, quality, engineering, and operations teams. She/he is a broad-based chemical technologist comfortable with industrial chemistry, able to make actionable recommendations to people across the company’s different functions. The individual will report to the Vice President of Technology.


Primary Duties include:

Management and expansion of a flexible applications lab at the Tuscaloosa site, intended to support commercial development activities such as:

Applications data to support efforts in key developing markets for DMSO (i.e., agrichemical, pharmaceutical, and advanced material formulation end-uses)

Project team support in plant process improvement / product development programs

Interactions with third party technology companies and technical consultants to support investment decisions

Chemistry support for the Gaylord Engineering Technology group

Troubleshooting and problem-solving associated with product Quality Control / Quality Assurance

Research into relevant analytical methods and associated data analysis

Chemistry support for new business development

Technical support for market research activities, in support of the company’s new opportunity assessment process.

Product technical support for the sales team and Gaylord’s customers.

Assistance in the generation of marketing materials


The Staff Chemist should be 1) enthusiastic to understand both the technology and processed developed by Gaylord to make its products and 2) effective in translating their technical knowledge into activities which enable multiple functions within the company.


EDUCATION

  • Advanced Chemistry degree (M.S. or Ph.D.)

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a relevant work environment.
  • Management experience preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong collaborative instincts, and ability to communicate effectively across various functions withing the company.
  • Solid R&D management capabilities (experimental design of experiments, project planning and management).
  • Excellent organization, verbal, and technical written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Knowledge and experience in principles and practice of good documentation practices with cGMPs and ISO 9001 is an advantage, although not required.
  • Responsibilities in an applications development / new chemical product development role is attractive, especially associated with specialty chemical products.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive documents.
  • Demonstrate ethical conduct, focus on goals, take ownership of actions, and act in the best interest of the Company.
