Position Summary

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Small Group Trainer will increase member retention by way of creating a welcoming environment for all YMCA members in the fitness center through member engagement, guidance and support. The Small Group Trainer will lead members in a small group class to achieve a higher level of fitness through a science-based, supportive, and progressive program.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for following basic principles of strength and conditioning, consistently complying with guidelines set by the YMCA and ACSM.
  • Responsible for refraining from writing diets, prescribing supplements, or diagnosing/curing any type of injury or illness; always referring members to a doctor when needed health or well-being is questioned.
  • Remaining alert to the condition of equipment, performing regular equipment safety checks and promptly reporting any concerns the supervisor.
  • Celebrates achievement of members related to program or personal goals, mastering specific skills or improving overall health and well-being.
  • Observes and adjusts approach to support all members capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.
  • Seeking to learn members names and develop meaningful relationships.
  • Always have class plans ready prior to the start of class.
  • Maintaining all certifications required by the position.
  • Staying current with trends in the field and exercise industry.
  • Playing a role in organizing and securing gifts for the annual campaign.
  • Assist with special events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age 18.
  • Certifications required within 30 days of hire: CPR/AED & First Aid, and New Employee Orientation.
  • Nationally recognized certification (see equivalency chart 1).
  • Minimum 6 months of Personal Training, Group Ex, or related experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to relate and communicate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals, and other documents.
  • Desire and ability to work with people of all ages and backgrounds.

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; occasionally stoop/bend.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times.
  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Must demonstrate initiative and sound judgment.
