About The Role

In this role, you will be responsible for underwriting reinsurance treaty business across all casualty lines - except professional lines. Experience with program management and strong working knowledge of Motor, General Liability and Workers Compensation is desired. Open to both insurance and reinsurance experience. The role may have some analytical work, in addition to underwriting, depending on successful applicant's background and interest. Role will include active engagement with Client Underwriting and our Structured Solutions team, as well as direct contact with trading partners.

This Includes

  • Underwriting
    • Make underwriting decisions within authority levels and support the escalation of treaties exceeding authority in accordance with Referral Guidelines.
    • Proactively initiate discussions with clients to identify their motivation, needs and priorities.
    • Develop appropriate reinsurance solutions that leverage the full range of Swiss Re capabilities including structuring to ensure adequate risk sharing.
    • Develop deal actions aligned with portfolio strategy and financial plan.
    • Recommend treaty terms and conditions including reinsurance contract reviews to ensure all needed wording elements are incorporated.
    • Perform underwriting audits and other client visits as needed.
  • Client Services
    • Build and maintain professional relationships with external clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Planning and Strategy
    • Participate in Swiss Re initiatives, projects, and cross functional teams as needed.
    • Stay educated on rapidly changing Casualty market trends assuring Swiss Re's Casualty underwriting strategy remains current.
  • Training and Development
    • Helps recruit, train, and develop team members as needed.
  • Actuarial
    • Based on candidate's interest, you have an option to combine underwriting with actuarial work ranging from limited actuarial work to full costings.
About The Team

The National / Regional Underwriting team is responsible for a diverse range of approximately 200 US ceding companies, including direct and broker-produced business. The team includes senior actuaries and underwriters who work with corresponding client managers and other staff including structured solutions, claims, risk management, reserving, contracts specialists and legal. The team is based across Armonk, NY, Chicago/Schaumburg IL and Kansas City and works with stakeholders in several Swiss Re offices including New York, NY, Toronto Canada and Westlake Village, CA.

About You

  • A minimum of 10+ years of underwriting Insurance/Reinsurance Liability experience with strong knowledge base in Casualty lines (GL, Motor, WC; primary, umbrella, excess as well as special coverages / industries such as Pollution Liability, Construction, etc). Experience with program management is strongly desired.
  • Undergraduate Degree.
  • Willingness and ability to travel (up to 20%).
  • Hybrid work model.

For Armonk, NY, the estimated base salary range for this position is $156,000 to $246,000. The specific salary offered for this, or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget. At Swiss Re, we take a "total compensation approach" when making compensation decisions. This means that we consider all components of compensation in their totality (such as base pay, short-and long-term incentives, and benefits offered), in setting individual compensation.
