Senior Staff Accountant

The Senior Staff Accountant serves as a key member of the accounting team and manages several aspects of the month-end close process. This position works closely with the Controller and Staff Accountants to maintain and improve accounting procedures and ensure accurate and timely general ledger closings at month-end, quarter-end and year-end. The accounting team also includes an accounts payable staff accountant, a cash receipts / accounts receivable staff accountant, a revenue and pledges receivable senior accountant (part-time), and the Controller.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Complete monthly fixed assets roll forward and depreciation schedules; accurately maintain fixed assets and WIP (construction or work in progress) records.
  • Complete monthly intangible assets roll forward and amortization schedules; accurately maintain these accounting records.
  • Evaluate leases to determine proper accounting treatment. Handle the accounting entries for lease assets and liabilities.
  • Complete nonprofit-specific monthly or quarterly close transactions including recognition of grant revenue and releases from restrictions.
  • Maintain accounting records and record journal entries related to investments and other treasury activities.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of monthly balance sheet reconciliations. Review and coach Staff Accountants on their assigned balance sheet reconciliations as assigned.
  • Approve and post journal entries and other transactions, at the discretion of the Controller.
  • Cross-train with the Controller to oversee the weekly accounts payable supervisor level tasks, including submitting ACH files and wires on the bank website.
  • Prepare various schedules and reports for annual audit and IRS Form 990 preparation at the request of the Controller.
  • Cross-train with staff accountants on key duties to provide coverage during their PTO.
  • Work comfortably in various systems including the accounting software, third party databases, bank websites, investment custodian record-keeping systems, IMLS grant system, and other systems possibly including Salesforce CRM, Ticketure POS, Tableau reporting dashboard, benefit carrier websites and reporting tools, etc.
  • Collaborate with the accounting team and museum staff from other departments to provide information and implement process improvements.
  • Respond to inquiries from external third parties, as appropriate.
  • Maintain organized accounting records.
  • Other duties and projects as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities: No.

Qualifications

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Accounting preferred
  • CPA preferred
  • 3 years of related experience required
  • Non-profit experience is a plus, but not required

Essential Functions

While performing the duties of this position, the employee will be required regularly to:

  • Sit for extended periods while utilizing resources such as a computer and accounting software.
  • Communicate effectively in person, over email, or using other communication platforms (e.g., MS Teams, Zoom, etc.).

While performing the duties of this position, the employee will occasionally be required to:

  • Lift and/or move light boxes and other materials of 20 lbs. or less.
