About Generate:Biomedicines

Generate:Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. The Company has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.

We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate:Biomedicines was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received nearly $700 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with over 300 employees.

The Role:

Generate Biomedicines is on the lookout for a highly experienced and dynamic Senior Scientist II to spearhead our High Throughput DNA Production as the group leader of HTP DNA assembly and production. In this multifaceted role, you'll not only be at the helm of molecular biology projects but also provide direction to the lab and project teams, ensuring the seamless execution of complex experiments that align with our ambitious therapeutic program goals.

You’ll have a unique opportunity to contribute to the development and application of pioneering experimental methods within your area of expertise, taking charge of initiatives from gene assembly to the optimization of novel DNA cloning strategies. You will play a central role in coordinating activities across our pipeline programs supporting DNA for a variety of protein production workflows which include custom, state-of-the-art automation.

The candidate will work closely with our Computational Sciences, Protein Sciences, and G:Labs departments in the planning and execution of our various DNA-related initiatives. Your hands-on leadership will empower the team to push the boundaries of generative biology, converting computationally designed proteins into tangible therapeutic solutions.

Here's how you will contribute:

  • Leadership and Strategy Execution: You'll contribute to the development of an overarching strategy for DNA assembly on a massive scale and drive forward innovative research projects, from inception through execution. This includes providing direction on complex experiments, harnessing your deep technical experience and understanding of the program's direction, and establishing a clear path for achieving our scientific ambitions.
  • Innovative Experimentation: Through your proven creativity and quantitative mindset, you'll lead the charge in developing and executing innovative experimental approaches that fuel program progress. You're expected to stay at the forefront of emerging methods, ensuring the adoption of cutting-edge techniques within your projects, including implementation and management of advanced laboratory automation technologies.
  • Data Analysis and Implementation: Rigorous data analysis and interpretation will be under your purview. You will guide your team in complex data analysis, working closely with the NGS team in monitoring the reliability and quality of DNA across experiments, and lead the implementation of new digital tools or strategies that enhance our R&D capabilities.
  • Collaboration and Team Development: As a lynchpin of collaboration, you’ll coordinate with internal teams and stakeholders, facilitating engagement to propel our projects forward. This includes regularly interfacing with cross-functional teams to inform experimental design and results, and drive key project decisions.
  • Coaching and Mentorship: As a mentor, you will build, coach, and drive a team of high-performing scientists. Identifying opportunities for professional growth, you'll nurture their scientific understanding and steer their development to ensure success amid our dynamic project and technology landscape.
  • Scientific Strategy Advancement: Your strategic contributions will be vital in refining program goals, executing scientific strategy, and staying abreast of scientific advancements. You’ll play a critical role in budget considerations, timeline development, and proactive problem-solving within our labs and project teams.

The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • A PhD in a relevant scientific discipline or equivalent post-bachelor's experience, combined with a minimum of 6-8 years/PhD or 12-14 years/MSc in a biotech/pharma setting.
  • You bring a track record of successful leadership and team development, backed by a minimum of 3 years of group management experience.
  • Expertise in bioinformatics tools, DNA sequencing/analysis, and mastery of high-throughput DNA synthesis and assembly methods.
  • Strong experience in a production environment or other large-scale, automation-based setting.
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively manage a diverse team.

Working at Generate, you will:

  • Be part of dynamic, diverse project-based teams that collaborate across the company with machine learning engineers, drug discovery researchers, and bioinformatics data scientists.
  • Actively contribute to the creation and development of groundbreaking projects.
  • Serve as a leader and mentor in your field, leveraging automated liquid handling, microfluidics, and closed-loop machine learning/wet lab integration to revolutionize drug development.
  • If you're a go-getter who thrives on tackling new challenges with urgency and enthusiasm, and you resonate with our mission to deliver transformative therapies, Generate Biomedicines is your next frontier.
