We are seeking a full-time onsite Scientist II, Production Chemistry to be the technical team member supporting the Production Chemistry Team for Mirus Bio’s products including in vitro transfection reagents, nucleic acid labeling reagents, and accessory products. This individual contributor position will take a hands-on role in the synthesis and analysis of compounds, and a lead role in streamlining processes, updating work instructions, and improving overall production chemistry processes to support the synthesis and analysis of compounds that are utilized in Mirus products. This position will report to the Production Manager and Tech Transfer Leader and work closely with Quality, Technical Support, Shipping and R&D departments. The Scientist II, Production Chemistry is expected to possess an extensive understanding of laboratory procedures and the ability to conduct work within cGMP guidelines, when applicable.

This is a full-time on-site position. This role works cross-functionally with all departments within Mirus Bio.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Technical team member supporting the Production Chemistry Team
  • Perform critical production and lab support functions including synthesis of lipids, polymers, and small molecules for Mirus Bio products. Extensively characterize compounds using various physical and chemical characterization techniques such gel permeation chromatography (GPC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), fluorescence, mass spectrometry (MS), Infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR)
  • Demonstrate thought leadership. Identify opportunities for improvement and minimize errors by applying technical skills and critical thinking.
  • Respond quickly to changing priorities and balance being a Team Member of multiple projects (including partnerships with external CMOs, projects with external test labs, internal tech transfers, cGMP method development, etc.) with potentially overlapping deadlines
  • Monitor inventory levels of raw materials to support production schedule and assist in ordering and receiving Production RUO and cGMP materials into inventory as needed
  • Maintain complete and thorough documentation including writing SOPs and updating existing documents as processes change.
  • Responsible for Technical Review of external CMO and external test lab batch records as needed
  • Write deviations and change controls as required
  • Participate in root cause analysis and drive continuous improvement.
  • Communication across multiple teams to eliminate barriers and ensure alignment with upstream and downstream partners
  • Follow GDP and cGMP guidelines and ensure quality compliance.
  • Build positive relationships during internal and external interactions
  • Demonstrate behavior outlined within the Mirus Bio Employee Handbook.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Production Manager and Tech Transfer Leader

REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s or Advanced degree in Chemistry, or other related discipline, or commensurate work experience

Professional:

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience working in a laboratory synthesizing and characterizing organic and/or polymer compounds
  • Capability to work in an organized manner, to make critical observations, and to maintain good records of the results.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and solve problems
  • Ability to work productively in a team environment
  • Ability to work in a laboratory setting and lift 35 lbs. occasionally. Repetitive motion may be a work environment stressor for this position
  • Demonstrated experience with technical writing including investigations, ability to modify and complete manufacture batch records and SOPs in an industry setting
  • Hands on experience with a variety of analytical techniques, including NMR, GPC/SEC, fluorescence, FT-IR, MS, UV-vis, HPLC, etc
  • Previous experience working for a life sciences company and in a cGMP, environment is preferred

Travel Requirements:

  • Ability to travel independently 5% of the time, including overnight travel.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle; Must have current and valid U.S. driver license

This position has a salary range of $75,000 - $95,000 per year and will be commensurate with experience.
