Axalta Coating Systems is seeking a Synthetic Chemist to join its Technology group in Philadelphia, PA. This scientist will work on fast paced projects supporting raw material qualifications in every technology for every business in Axalta. In this role, the scientist will interact closely with other Technology teams, with the Global Procurement organization, and with suppliers to advance initiatives that ensures raw material supply security and generate value for the company.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Translate qualification requirements into project goals. Develop testing protocols that meet project technical objectives.
  • Test and characterize experimental raw materials. Prepare and process experimental coating samples for evaluation.
  • Analyze data, issue recommendations, create reports and communicate results.
  • Network with resources in other Axalta functions to maximize productivity of technical programs and implemented results.
  • Organize objectives, set milestones and deliver results against aggressive timelines.
  • Coordinate related activities including regulatory evaluation, coating application, manufacturing scale-up, quality specification setting.
  • Maintain a clear and up-to-date understanding of technical coatings literature and competitive intellectual property.
  • Follow all requirements for laboratory quality and safety certifications.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science or Coatings; advanced degrees (Masters or PhD) are preferred. Serious consideration will be given to degreed candidates in other science-related fields with relevant work experience in polymer synthesis and in coatings.
  • At least 3 years of polymer synthesis and coatings experience is desired.
  • Knowledge of product design and formulation.
  • Skills to develop and/or implement coating characterization test methods, calibrate and run instrumentation, and interpret results.
  • Knowledge of Experimental Designs (DOE) and statistical analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), problem solving capabilities, and the ability to work independently or as a part of a team.
  • An understanding of chemical manufacturing as it relates to coatings, resins or polymers is a plus.
  • Familiar with ISO certification requirements.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 20% of the time
  • Must be physically able to stand, walk, reach, climb or balance, and kneel.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close and distant vision and color vision.
