Job Description
REPORTS TO: Director HS&E
SUPERVISES: Safety Supervisors, Fire Brigade, Occupational Nurse, and Environmental Coordinator
Authorities / Responsibilities
monitors for confined space certification and firefighting PPE (i.e. turnout gear, SCBAs).
DIRECTION EXERCISED: Full discretionary authority to assign work.
DISCRETION EXERCISED: Full discretionary authority to correct, discipline, process grievances and recommend pay increases, transfers, promotions, and discharges.
LIAISES WITH: HS&E Department, Operations Department, and government
organizations that oversee health, safety, and environment regulations.
ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES: Position’s evaluation will include, but is not limited to, the
company’s incident rate.
SAFETY: Must comply with company, federal, state, and local safety and environmental rules and regulations while performing daily job tasks.
SALARY RANGE: Salary range depends on relevant experience.
$75,651- $105,808

Authorities / Responsibilities
- Oversees development, recommend and implement general accident preventive programs to include specific protective procedures and devices.
- Oversees schedule and carry out periodic safety inspections to identify environmental and occupational hazards.
- Responsible for developing recommendations for the protection of life and property at Austal USA.
- Be able to maintain a working relationship with the local fire department and government counterparts.
- Maintain a successful fire watch program for all ships requiring hot work permits.
- Act as incident command (IC) during emergencies on Austal USA site.
- Oversees reviewing all accident and incident reports and recommend corrective action to eliminate reoccurrence.
- Oversees investigates all major accidents; coordinate the processing of Workman’s Compensation claims to include claim progress, final settlement and required reporting. Provide advice to company counsel and insurance carriers.
- Oversees all operations and activities of the Nurse’s Office.
- Oversees ensuring compliance with existing safety protection regulations as pertaining to all applicable governmental organizations.
- Oversees reviewing all reports submitted by insurance carriers or authorized governmental agencies and take necessary actions on those reports.
- Oversees maintaining adequate records for statistical measurements and develop performance reports. Ensure that reporting conforms to all standard practices of the safety and environmental industries and government regulations.
- Required to assist Director in ensuring compliance with corporate, state, and federal regulations and guidelines regarding to occupational safety and health, hazardous chemical use and chemical waste storage as it relates to maritime shipyard and general construction.
- Oversees coordination and conduct supervisory and other production safety training programs. Advise management periodically on the status of the safety program and new safety techniques.
- Oversees maintaining contacts with counterparts in other companies and represent the company in national and local safety activities and organizations.
- Oversees compliance with all environmental and EPA regulations.
- Must manage HS&E Department budget and reports.
- Must be familiar with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), state, and federal standards, follow OSHA and government standards, and file reports required by these organizations.
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering science, Health & Safety and/or environmental fields required.
- Ten (10) years’ related experience in an industrial setting
- NIMS (National Incident Management System) qualified, Advanced Maritime Fire Fighting trained, Firemenship 1 and 2 certified, HAZMAT trained
- Any certification by the National Safety Council considered a plus
- Physical requirements:
- Standing 30% of the time; sitting 30% of the time; walking 40% of the time
- Must be able to lift and carry 10 pounds approximately 5% of the work day
- Hazards and dangers normal for shipbuilding environment
- Noise, heat, dust, and fumes normal for shipbuilding environment
