Twelve is a new kind of chemical company built for the climate era. Our breakthrough technology eliminates emissions by turning CO2 into essential products. We are a team of scientists, engineers and problem solvers on a mission to fundamentally shift the way the world addresses climate change and lead the transition to a fossil free future with our carbon transformation technology.

Job Brief

We need you as part of a team of dedicated process development engineers that create and demonstrate scalable processes of our bench-scale methods. You will join the Process Development Department, which is responsible for producing Twelve’s CO2-transforming membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) at the heart of our electrolyzers.

The Process Development team is building Twelve’s MEA Fabrication pilot line to support our product development and initial customer engagement, and define our manufacturing processes. As part of the team, you will explore, create, and validate technologies and scale up processes that - extend Twelve’s chemical processing and production capabilities from bench into pilot scale.

You will work across the company engaging with chemists, process, mechanical and software engineers, and supply chain to deliver these processes from the bench to our pilot MEA fabrication line and help us introduce the world’s first CO2 electrolyzer at scale.

What You Will Do

  • Your first project will focus on in house MEA development and scale up.
  • After achieving validation at the bench scale through a stage-gate process, you will design the pilot scale process, evaluate and procure the equipment and hardwares to achieve success.
  • You will lead experiments to understand failure modes, reliability, and fatigue life of hardware and stack systems.
  • You will be supported by a diverse team of scientists and engineers throughout the company to develop, optimize, validate, and document these processes.
  • Within 6 - 12 months, it is our goal to have the process scaled and validated, after which it will be transferred to Twelve’s operations group. You will have the opportunity to partner with other teams at Twelve..

Who You Are

  • You are able to demonstrate at least one of the following:
    • Proven experience in scaling bench scale chemical processes (including but not limited to mixing/separation/coating/R2R etc) to pilot, or from pilot to mass production.
    • Experience in producing materials for energy storage or ion exchange in the battery or fuel cell industry; alternatively, experience interacting with, or managing relationships with suppliers, vendors, and/or contract manufacturers of those materials.
    • Experience in conductive ink and coating development and production.
    • Experience in selecting, validation, and commissioning pilot and production scale equipment.
    • Experience in scaling electrolyzer processes from lab, to pilot, to full scale production with an understanding of how each stage provides value to the company.
  • You are curious about new technologies and comfortable to apply fundamentals to learn about and solve problems outside your subject matter expertise.
  • You enjoy creatively building new hardware systems that will bring bench-top ideas to commercially relevant production scale.
  • You are proficient in analyzing and presenting data (experience with Python and JMP statistical software a plus), and at least a minimum familiarity with accessing data from a database.
  • You have prior experience in creating and updating SOPs, batch records, technical plans/reports and tech transfer documents.
  • You care about process documentation as well as clear intrateam and interteam communication of technical ideas and conclusions.
  • You prioritize safety throughout your workflow. Experience with Process Hazard Analysis at 100+ Liters scale is a plus.
