Philanthropy Internship

Title: Philanthropy Internship

Reports to: Philanthropy Events Officer and Chief Philanthropy and Community Engagement Officer

Overview:

The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens invites applicants for a Development office internship in the Zoo’s

fundraising department. The development department handles the Zoo’s Annual Fund, grant writing,

sponsorships, donor relations, Heart of the Zoo Society, corporate relations, Planned Giving Council,

fundraising events, gift processing, the Zoo’s Young Professional Group, Capital Campaigns, and other donations. Benefits of interning in the Development

Office: accompany staff on behind the scenes and VIP donor tours that may include meet and greets

with animals, discovering the ins and outs of the Zoo, and a unique FUNdraising learning experience.

Responsibilities:

Interns will assist the Development Department with the following:

  • Assisting with donor and special events as needed
  • Conducting online research
  • Database entry and Gift processing
  • Acknowledgement letter writing
  • Projects within the Zoo that relate to the Development Department
  • Attending and participating in meetings
  • Amazon Wish List and In-Kind Donations
  • Other duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • Major in communication, public relations, journalism, marketing, fundraising, or related field
  • Excellent writing/editing skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Willingness to take initiative and motivation to seek new learning opportunities
  • Keen attention to detail when proofreading, editing, and fact-checking
  • Flexibility and a good sense of humor
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Good research ability and command of the Internet
  • Professionalism


Physical requirements:

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to walk, bend, kneel and crawl.
  • Able to lift and carry 50 pounds without difficulty.
  • Ability to traverse zoo grounds on foot and operate a motorized golf cart.


Additional Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Enrollment in or graduation from an associate or bachelor’s degree program in a related field.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills including professional and respectful interpersonal skills
  • Excellent safety practices including safe operation of hand tools, vehicles, and equipment
  • Basic computer operations, including Microsoft Office, and willingness/ability to use technology
  • Ability to learn new tasks and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Effective time management including prioritization
  • Sound judgment and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to remain focused despite interruptions and manage stress to perform job effectively
