Job Description

Personal Finance and Utility Columnist

The San Francisco Chronicle seeks a columnist to dive into the financial issues and decisions facing Californians every day and offer advice for living and thriving here. This person should be as comfortable with and eager to write an explainer on changes to California’s tax code as a narrative on a family scammed of their savings.

This columnist will play a critical role in our coverage and will be one of the newsroom voices who we promote and highlight to our readers across all our platforms, print and digital. They will be expected to lead our coverage of how California’s policies, laws and culture impact people’s money – and their lives. This columnist should view data analysis as an opportunity to find stories and help people make decisions, and should be able to write with clarity and authority to help our readers understand complex financial issues. They should see personal finance stories as stories about people, and opportunities to investigate the tensions about what it means to live in one of the most expensive places in the world – and how to successfully manage your money and build wealth here. Housing, insurance, retirement, taxes, inflation, school admissions and tuition, gas versus electric, the grocery bill – all of these subjects and more would be within this columnist’s purview.

The Responsibilities

  • Jump on news and spot story angles and trends that localize national personal finance topics to our California audience.
  • Write several times per week and pursue long, medium and short-term stories.
  • Forge connections with our audience to answer their questions and bring their feedback into our work.

You have:

  • A knack for spotting great story angles and seeing how national trends could play out differently in the Golden State.
  • Passion for the beat: the desire to help people make decisions and live better; fascination with money’s role in our lives.
  • At least five years of experience and a track record of producing rigorous, readable journalism.

This position can be remote and located anywhere in California.

In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in California. The reasonable estimate is between $90,000 and $125,000. Please note this information is specific to those hired in San Francisco. If this role is open to candidates outside of San Francisco, the salary range would be aligned to that specific location. A final decision on the successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education.
