We change state and local laws, like occupational licensing and local regulations, to make it easier to work and earn an honest living, especially for people of modest means. We fight policies and projects that threaten the rights of property owners to keep what they have worked so hard to own, like eminent domain abuse and civil forfeiture. And we work to hold government officials accountable, by advocating for the end of qualified immunity.
We do this through strategic advocacy in city halls, state legislatures, and communities. We engage decision makersand impacted individuals through outreach, organizing, training, coalition building, public demonstrations, the media, research, policy recommendations, and lobbying.
Events and in-person outreach are critical to our work. We organize and host town halls, roundtables, briefings, community events, listening tours, public demonstrations, and trainings, and frequently canvas communities door-to-door. The Activism Team is dedicated to delivering high-quality programming while maintaining adherence to cost-effective strategies. This new, multi-faceted role will also be pivotal in enhancing our external outreach efforts by coordinating our internal operations and preparations.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Planning events
- Handle all logistics, including venues, invitations and RSVPs, attendee lead cultivation, programming, food, decorations, and ordering of materials such as giveaways and handouts
- Ensure events are cost-effective and impactful
- Audit events and refine our best practices so we are continuing to improve our cost-effectiveness and programming to ensure we reach our goals
- Develop partnerships with community venues where appropriate
- Coordinating and cultivating lead generation
- Identify impacted communities, small business corridors, and individuals, and create in-person canvassing plans
- Communicate with leads ahead of canvassing trip to cultivate interest through mailings, email, phone, and social media
- Communicate with prospective attendees before event to confirm attendance and after to maintain engagement
- Managing the internal editing, production, and distribution processes for Activism’s publications (including but not limited to policy reports, presentations, flyers, etc.)
- Managing the internal organization of the team that is critical to our functions, including:
- Asset and file management
- Maintaining thorough records of activities and achievements for reporting to donors and our Board
- Maintaining an inventory of Activism’s storage space and ensuring we are using existing supplies and replenishing what is needed
This role is supported by enthusiastic managers, and the position offers unique opportunities for professional development, growth, and long-term advancement. The candidate will join a close-knit team and be expected to work well with others to accomplish our goals.
This role is primarily internal with limited travel for higher-priority events. Travel may increase based on the interest of the successful candidate.
The candidate’s work will support:
- Reducing state occupational licensing laws that disproportionately impact people of modest means; for example, through our new “Beauty, Not Barriers” initiative and barbering project
- Collaborating with city officials to enact regulatory reforms to make it cheaper, faster, and simpler to start a small business, through our “Cities Work” initiative
- “Americans Against Qualified Immunity,” our initiative to end qualified immunity
- Stopping the abuse of eminent domain
- Ending civil forfeiture
- Expanding the ability of home cooks and vendors to sell food and support their families
Benefits:
- Hybrid work schedule
- Flexible work hours with our core business hours of 10am and 4pm
- Smart casual dress code; casual Fridays
- Health, Dental, and Vision insurance (IJ covers 100% of individual premiums)
- Free Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, and Life insurance plans
