Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Manager of Education and Public Engagement, the Museum Educator offers educational tours, workshops, and lessons for school-age students, adult learners, and special group tours for the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum (Museum). The Museum Educator will also engage with visitors of multiple ages and interpret the Museum’s collection through the Museum’s gallery carts. Additionally, the Museum Educator assists with all school and public programs, both in the planning and day-of implementation as needed. The Museum Educator will assist the Education and Public Engagement team to with the planning, coordinating, and day-of execution for programs including but not limited to, weekend programs, evening programs, outreach initiatives, and other programs that may arise for the Museum.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provides a friendly and welcoming presence for all guests throughout the Museum by thoughtfully guiding their learning in conversations about Agua Caliente history and culture.
  • Assists the Museum Education Specialist with the development and implementation of K-12 object-based Museum educational programs for school field trip programs.
  • Facilitates school programs in and out of the Museum.
  • Gives input to Museum Education Specialist for the development of school programs, gallery guides, and other educational content.
  • Assists the Museum Public Programs Specialist for Museum programs as needed.
  • Facilitates summer camp groups, assist with the creation of summer camp workshops.
  • Supports and collaborates with Education and Public Engagement staff and other departments to support the Museum mission and departmental initiatives.
  • Works with Visitor Services staff to ensure that museum visitors have a positive experience with the Museum.
  • Interact with visitors using objects and education gallery carts in the museum and along the Oasis Trail.
  • Provides group tours to youth and adult audiences in the museum and along the Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza’s Oasis Trail and Museum’s Education Garden.

Qualifications

  • High school degree or GED required. Bachelor’s degree in education or equivalent is preferred.
  • Experience in a formal or informal educational setting (volunteer experience included).
  • A declared interest in and enjoyment in working with/teaching children and families to create a positive museum experience.
  • Able to work with large number of children, parents, chaperones, teachers visiting the museum or at an off- site educational event.
  • Experience teaching utilizing classroom/group management skills preferred.
  • Able to work with large number of adult tour groups visiting the museum.
  • Familiarity with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other office programs.
  • Ability to function in a high energy team environment.
  • Flexible schedule including weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings is required. Hours may vary by week.
  • Knowledge of tribal communities and governments, including familiarity with the location, geography, history and key personnel at Indian tribes in the region preferred.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and communities.
  • Must have a clear understanding and respect for the culture of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and the mission of the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum.

Work Environment

Typically, the job requires the employee to sit or stand for extended periods of time, work mostly indoors but sometimes outside, as well as stand, walk, climb, crouch, and stoop. The position occasionally requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds. This position requires working on weekends and evenings, as required and arranged in advance.
